When I got laid off from a division of Applied Industrial Technologies I had to sign one. Needless to say I don't think it will hold up in court if I go back to that industry. Agreement said I wouldn't work for a competitor of UZ Engineered Products or one of their customers or potential customers for 2 years. My attorney laughed at the contract.

It's complicated, that's for sure. But we are excited. Several of us want things run a different way, and the three of us are committed to that desire, for the good of all of us. I'm quite comfortable running a territory as I run my territory as it's own entity, but running a business responsible for 19 employees is a whole different animal.

Most people I talk to have nothing but good things to say about you, but you sure come across as a condescending prick. Do you have an inferiority complex you've attempted to overcome through overachievement? Or were you fondled as a child?

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

I've increased my income and lessened my workload every time it's happened to me. That probably means I didn't try hard enough to land the right job to begin with though.

I think the only way that they can make one stick is if you take money for signing it. Example: You sell a business and the buyer assigns a value to your "No Compete" agreement. Or, if you go to work somewhere and you are paid a certain amount for your "No Compete" agreement. That would be like a sign on bonus that is tied directly to the "No Compete" agreement. Any other agreement is viewed as an attempt to limit your ability to earn a living.

Not really, the same has happened to me. Although - it is not necessarily what I wanted. I chose a small company for a (several) reason and now I work in the largest in the business.

There is more to it than just that. Three conditions have to be met, and they have to be reasonable. I don't think it is reasonable the way it is written. I did sit down with the CEO for a half hour yesterday, and he told me the details of the new programs he is rolling out. I told him my concerns about the NC, and other concerns I have about things that need to be addressed. He wants me, and the rest of us to take a giant leap of faith. I need them to show me some good faith. Yeah, I'm in the position I'm in, and it should work out great. But here's the deal. The second I sign that, he could fire me because he doesn't like my shirt, and I'm fucked for 2 years.
