So, have him swing by, get the VIN, and run a CarFax when he's there?

I can understand the guy hesitating. I got a bunch of emails on my Bronco when I was selling it, and many seemed a little fishy. A bunch of people would email asking for my address to come look at it. In every case I gave them my cell number and told them to call me and we would arrange something, and 7 out of 10 never contacted me again.

I was motivated to sell, but not to the point that I was going to risk my safety.

So I think as a seller you should, by default, be cautious with what information you give out. Nobody asked me for my VIN when I sold the Bronco, but should they have, I probably would not have given it to them either.

Haha, that makes a lot more sense. I thought the same thing Eric did. The wording at the end of your post was a little confusing.

Yea no shit. I'd spend a couple hundred on fuel especially pulling a car for half the way.

Seems way more fishy to NOT give the VIN vs being asked for it. You of course have to read every situation, but maybe a better course of action would be to have a phone conversation to explain you thoughts.

I find your logic strange. I can come look at it and get the VIN to check it out, and I can leave with that information and you're not worried about that. It's a $500 car not even in your name. If someone wanted to do bad things, there are a million cars on ebay and other sales sites that post their VIN's all day. In fact, It's required to post on ebay so people can check things out. ( as I want to do here).
How about I get a local State Trooper my friend knows come by and get the VIN, will that be ok ? You're in town right ? 104 Cottonwood, is that correct ?

                        His response:
The car is gone and if you had wanted it, you would have gotten it sooner. Have a nice day.

On a local import site, on crap you sell, it is required to post up the vin to a car, motor, or transmission. Never heard of the issue he stated.

He listed his '96 Impala for sale on CL. Had some guys come out and look at it, stayed for about 2 minutes and left.
About a week later they call him back saying they want the car but he has to bring it to them in Pleasant Grove. He said that they were being real persistant, and pushy about him coming out. He did not like the vibe and just blew them off.
Few days later his dogs are going apeshit at 2am. He looks out back and sees flashlights over his back fence pointing at the car. He grabs his pistol and heads out there only to be told to drop the gun, they are police. He does and walks out to talk to them. They say that the car has been reported stolen. He told them that there is no way in hell that he had the title and it had been titled in his name for years. Showed them the title and they were convienced, gave him the detectives name and case number.
He called and found out that the "stupid mother fuckers" had taken his VIN and got a title in their name then reported it stolen.
End result he got 13 years in prison.
