  • Craigslist jack ass...

Trying to buy a $500 parts car (4 hours from me), no title. Tell him to send me the VIN so I can make sure it's not stolen and run a carfax..Jack ass sends me this:

"After having a discussion with my friends in law enforcement, as well as a local judge, I have determined that the best course of action is for you to come view the vehicle in person. I will not be providing you with the VIN after being warned of scams involving crooks who fraudulently acquire registration for other vehicles using information gathered from unsuspecting victims. You are welcome to come see the vehicle but in five days, it will be disassembled and taken to the crusher to be recycled. Thank you and have a nice day."

What's wrong with what he did? He's covering his ass, he doesn't have the title so I'm assuming he doesn't want to take any risk.

Maybe it's stolen and he is being defensive?

I don't think I would provide a VIN to someone I don't know either even if I had owned it from day 1. Someone asking for a VIN from 4 hours away could sound fishy.

its the vin for a $500 car, not his SS#. if the vin was that important it wouldnt be bolted to your dash for the world to see.

          god bless.

requesting a VIN to a vehicle you want to purchase is fishy?

not GIVING a VIN to a vehicle you want to SELL is fishy!!!

LOL, exactly what would he be risking by giving you the VIN number? You realize there are about 10k VIN numbers plastered all over eBay, right?

In his defense I will say that this has happened to one of my buddies.
He listed his '96 Impala for sale on CL. Had some guys come out and look at it, stayed for about 2 minutes and left.
About a week later they call him back saying they want the car but he has to bring it to them in Pleasant Grove. He said that they were being real persistant, and pushy about him coming out. He did not like the vibe and just blew them off.
Few days later his dogs are going apeshit at 2am. He looks out back and sees flashlights over his back fence pointing at the car. He grabs his pistol and heads out there only to be told to drop the gun, they are police. He does and walks out to talk to them. They say that the car has been reported stolen. He told them that there is no way in hell that he had the title and it had been titled in his name for years. Showed them the title and they were convienced, gave him the detectives name and case number.
He called and found out that the "stupid mother fuckers" had taken his VIN and got a title in their name then reported it stolen.
End result he got 13 years in prison.

Did he have the 3 Stooges as his lawyer team? Seems like it would be exceedingly easy to prove that the car was his. Neighbors couldn't testify the car had been in his driveway for years? Didn't have a couple of pictures of it on FB with date stamps or anything? Couldn't verify through the previous owner that he had purchased the car from them? Doesn't add up.

A buddy has to take a car to his kid where this one is located. So in exchange for using my trailer and a tank of gas, he's gonna pick this one up for me.

I just want to carfax the thing and make sure its not stolen. If someone wanted to do "bad things" there are about a half million cars on ebay with a VIN you could steal...
