The plans for a ship that has been dubbed Titanic II will be unveiled in New York, according to Australian billionaire Clive Palmer said.

Palmer, one of Australia's richest men, announced plans in April to construct the replica Titanic with exactly the same dimensions as the original.

He will release the design on the Intrepid Museum on Manhattan's West Side during a gala on Dec. 4, according to AFP. The dinner menu will reportedly be the same menu as Titanic passengers were served on the day it say on April 15, 1912.

He plans on having the ship built in China before an initial passenger trip from Southampton in England to New York.

The ship is planned to be the same dimensions of the original and would have the same class separations as the original.

Unlike the Titanic, Palmer has said the new ship would have more safety features and air conditioning.

On Monday, Palmer announced the appointment of Steve Hall, co-author of 'Titanic the Ship Magnificent' as design consultant and historian for the project to ensure the new ship will be a modern replica of the original vessel.

The original Titanic sank on its initial voyage, killing more than 1,500.

Palmer said the rebuild was a tribute to the spirit of the men and women who worked on the original Titanic.

"These people produced work that is still marveled at more than 100 years later and we want that spirit to go on for another 100 years," he said.
Sounds like something that would be really badass to see. I wonder if it will have a huge "Made in China" gold sticker on it?

I've been following this for awhile. Pretty stupid IMO. You really want to recreate something that is infamous for sending over 1500 people to a terrible death and then have a celebratory atmosphere about it? It's his money, I guess. I think it's pretty tasteless.

Has he already started planning the maiden voyage? Does he plan to have any iceberg's involved?

Recreating the iceberg would be pretty tasteless, but the ship itself is a piece of history. I think it's incredibly interesting and it would definitely generate revenue, but I agree it is infamous nonetheless - but that's kind of the point. I wonder if it's going to be coal/steam powered?

I hope he doesn't follow the same dimensions exactly, a bigger rudder might be a good idea.

Dumb. The Titanic isn't even that big anymore relative to new cruise ships.

More money, more problems I suppose.

And add some bow thrusters hopefully...

Plus, he's equipping it with the proper number of life boats. Where's the thrill in that?
