  • So tell me about coon dogs

I'm not trying to collect dogs. I have one husky I have had for 9 years and that's enough for now.

About a month ago this stray coon hound showed up. Nice dog, good around kids. After about a week I took him to the pound. Two weeks later he is back. I call animal control and they said they will notify the owner where he is. Of course they won't tell me where the owner lives. The pound will not come get him because they say they do not go to the county and that I would have to call the sherrif. I am the only one who cares to keep him from starving. Most of the time all he does is run and run and run, swim in my stank pond, chase frogs, turtles, mice, snakes, skunks. The dog is having a great time. He seems to stay out of the road. Once he is on the scent of something though, he does not give up easy and will bark seems like forever. I'm starting to like the bastard, but I don't really want to lay claim to him. I might take him back to the pound.

    Pros/cons of these breeds?

That dog could have been caged or chained up somewhere... Just put a little extra food out for him and let him continue to have the time of his life. My parents have always had coon hounds and they're great dogs I m o. Not so great in a subdivision because like you said once they smell a squirrel or get on a trail they don't listen to commands.

Yeah, when he showed up 2 weeks later, he had a shock collar on, but he has since lost it. He hasn't been neutered either.

If he's tolerable the way he is, thank the universe for its provenance. Hounds are hard headed as fuck, and changing established behaviors in adult hounds is one of the most challenging problems a dog trainer can face.

                          Me too, I am dissapoint.

I recently had a coon/mix dog wander on to my property. I was feeling the same way you are, take her to the pound or not..? She's been one of the best damn dogs I've had. Luckily she doesn't bark much but when she does it's for a reason. She doesn't really bother anything and doesn't eat too much so I guess she can kick it. Oh and I had her fixed/tune-up/shots done.

I have a feeling I take him to the pound, he'll just be back in a while. Given the shock collar, he was either a barking problem, fenced prob or both. The little girl next door put a pink collar on him so I guess she kinda claims him now, but I don't know if anyone besides me is feeding him and I haven't been feeling him daily. He found a mouse in his bowl this morning and chased it under the house. I thought he was never going to shut up. He seems to only bark when he has a reason. Yesterday it was a turtle he found he was carrying in his mouth. I saw him go bury it and went to see what it was and freed the turtle. The dog came back to scold it. Its entertaining at least.
