What I mean by that Ryan, is that the company as a whole likely has policies regarding their compensation plan, which your boss has to abide by. Unless your boss is the CEO, there's not much wiggl room in those policies.

I am up against that myself. My company brought me into this position for a song, as it was an internal promotion with a huge jump in responsibilities, so they had my old salary as a basis. I did get a cost of living increase, and a more than average raise, but not in line with compable performers.

Fast-forward to today and with the experience garnered, I am responsible for the largest accounts in my region. My boss is one of my biggest fans, and wants to give me more, but the company is more concerned about their bottom line, and I'm just a number on the books. The only way to get the increase I deserve will be to seek employment elsewhere, or possibly they'll cave to keep me, when I put in my notice.

I was told by a friend many years ago that the only way to get a large salary increase is to go to a different company. He did exactly that, and then ironically got hired back on with the original company at the higher pay scale, it just took a couple years.
I report to the owner. It's a small technology startup in its 5th year of operation in its with an absolutely killer product that is selling like crazy, and the team is growing, but with a few growing pains along the way. The business owner is a bit worried about growing too fast, and wants to carefully bring on people, so there isnt any personality conflicts with too much change. I can agree with that, but it puts a strain on the existing team until those new hires come in. I am doing a few peoples jobs, because i know the people whose jobs i am taking on =)

Great points, and the one thing i am noting is my boss is relying on me to get shit done. Pretty good feeling to be becoming known as the go to guy. Just the go to guy has got to get paid sooner or later

Make yourself invaluable, do your best to run the whole place. Then hit them with a request for more money under threat of leaving. Be prepared to follow through or they won't respect you. My old company is fucked, it will take them years to recover but they also can't just put an ad in the paper and find someone with my skills.

I'd say any time between 7:30 and 9:00 AM. After 9:00 the bos is usually worried about other things. Try and catch him on his way in the door so he has his hands full too, he'll agree to anything just to get away and get to his office.

Don't forget that unless you're doing something really REALLY amazing, odds are that if you picked it up in a few months someone else will too...

Then at least you don't have to deal with corporate bullshit, which puts you in a better position, but still less leverage than taking your skillset elsewhere.

PM me if this up and coming technology has a fit in the state and local government space. If it's software related, perhaps I can help you break into the CA SLG market, if there's margin to be had.

I wouldnt even really have this under consideration if it wasnt for being hired on for one role, and ending up doing 4 peoples work.

I also feel a bit of regret at going in at my salary point having a different bonus structure/commission/compensation package in mind, but I cant help that and cant negotiate off that, or have any basis that would be relevant. All I can do is showcase my performance, my attitude, and my widely expanded responsibilities. The third factor is the thing that is making me consider moving up a timetable. I dont want to end up getting paid for 1 gig while performing 3-4 (Sales Engineering, Marketing, Partner Management, and Training).

The plus side is i dig what i'm doing, and i am doing quite well at it. I just dont want to live in apartment forever, you know? hah!
How the heck are you getting several good performance reviews in less than 6 months? AFAIK, most companies only do their real reviews yearly. Maybe they got you pumped up thinking your a bigger badass than you really are from atta boy's and other talks. Maybe you really are. 1 year mark sounds about right though. I know it may seem like a long time to you, but not to your employer. All the best to you man. Its been fun watching you grow up. Just leave the goats alone.

It really depends on the company and how valuable you are to them, and whether your superiors who make the decisions recognize it or not. All I can say is go interview for some other jobs and get some offers to back it up. Anyone can ask for a raise after a short time and maybe you deserve it, but you also need to decide if you are willing to leave if you don't get what you ask for. If you ask for a raise now and they tell you no and you stay, you could be setting yourself up for failure later. The economy and job market sucks these days and a lot of employers take advantage of it.

I have never asked for one. I have always been given one and/or promoted.

I will be asking for one shortly after returning from Malaysia, that or ask to go back hourly......

Depends on the field... If i'm not getting a 10% raise every 6 months or so I'm looking for another place to work.
