You're right. I once went on a tour and was within feet of the SR-71. I reached out from about 28 inches away slowly moving towards it in a trance state of mind with my arm out. I could slowly feel my insides starting to bubble as if my stomach was housing an unstable nitroglycerin plant. If I got any closer I am pretty sure I would have exploded fortunately, it was around that time a man dressed in all black jumped out of no where and tackled me to the ground. To this day I truly don't know what would have happened if I actually touched it.

You honestly think we don't already have that?

I've touched one. I didn't even get tackled, lame.

A Cadet Commander from my AFJROTC (graduated a few years before me) grew up to pilot the SR-71 and eventually became a Shuttle Commander. His mom was my High School history teacher. The Blackbird currently on display at the National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center has his name on it as it's last commander.

He's a pretty cool guy. He now works at ATK, the company that builds the solid rocket boosters for the shuttle and the new Space Launch System (SLS) rocket that will be more powerful than the Saturn V.

Just because Clinton renamed the SDI doesn't mean it was scrubbed. I believe it's been renamed twice since as well.

We do not need anything like this for spying. Satellites pretty much have that market cornered now. I would think that destroying other countries satellites would be of great interest if it hit the fan.

Check the link in the first post for more reading than you'll know what to do with:
Any real aviation nerd knows of the book Sled Driver by Brian Shul (SR-71 pilot). It's been out of print forever - only 3200 copies were printed in 1994. Used copies if you can ever find it will set you back hundreds of dollars. A rare 'new' copy will be many thousand dollars. http://www.amazon.com/Sled-Driver-Flying-Worlds

That was what the SR-72 was supposed to do, but they never finished the upgrades.
