To be honest, I stopped going to HD because the last time I was there, some brood sow behind the counter refused to check me out, and pointed to the self-checkout counter. I told the fat 'stupid motherfucker' that I didn't want to use the self checkout counter that I wasn't sure the silly weigh-in function would work with all the loose stuff I had, and she told me she wasn't going to check me out that I had no choice. I looked at her for a sec, dumped my hand basket full of about 200 nuts/bolt/washers out on the floor, told her she could go fuck herself, and walked out. Been going to Lowes ever since.

the number of SMF employees at my hick town HD is low... hell, there isn't even a Lowes, but when I still lived in DFW, I wouldn't ever go to Lowes... if I had to, it was in a pinch situation.

When I used to do remodeling, I HATED Lowes, they are NOT contractor friendly IMO

HD has better costumer service in my experience. The one by my house has greeters with shopping carts and they ask you if you need help as soon as you walk in the door.

I fucking HATE the complete lack of help at both stores, though HD is far worse when it comes to customer service. I once stood at the paint desk for close to an hour, and not one person asked if I needed help. I won't ever buy paint from HD again.

The wife was picking out paint swatches, I was standing at the counter trying to get little pint samples of the colors she picked out. But at my local HD, the swatches are right next to the counter. Granted, it was 8 pm or so, but I couldn't believe the lack of help. Been going to SW for paint ever since.
