The FAA regulation basically says that if the airline doesn't say it's ok, then it is illegal. As far as the airlines go, it's cheaper and easier to just ban the devices than to test them and approve them for use. As far as I know, FCC still has an outright ban on mobile phone usage in aircraft.

Mythbusters has been wrong before. I'll look for that episode. I've worked with a FAA DER who has been testing electromagnetic interference on flight controls for 12 years, since the FAA started requiring it for FADEC (full authority digital engine control) equipped rotorcraft. He says he's never seen any effect either, but that doesn't stop him, or the FAA from looking.

Edit: I should clarify, he doesn't look necessarily for interference from mobile phones or the bandwidths mobile phones operate on, but all devices across the full EM spectrum that could cause interference in engine controls or communications.

We made passengers do that too (USAF) but from discussions i heard with aircrews they were most concerned with navigation equipment on approach/final. Would suck on a CAT111 and the mofo go haywire b/c some POS is chatting on facebook.

I just thought the video was funny especially with David spade who goes over the video. It is just a video everyone knows really well so it was easy to use in this thread
