Man Arrested for Punching Teenager on Plane

Police in Boise, Idaho, arrested a 68-year-old man on Tuesday for reportedly punching a 15-year-old boy who refused to turn off his iPhone on a flight.

"He punched him so hard there was a mark on the teen's arm," Lt. Kent Lipple told Boise's KBOI2.com.

The teenager, on a Las Vegas-to-Boise flight operated by Southwest, was playing games and listening to music, police say, when flight attendants told passengers to power down electronic devices.

Russell Miller, witnesses said, became angry that the teen didn't respond.

After the incident, pilots contacted air-traffic control, who requested that police officers be waiting at the gate upon arrival.

Miller was charged with misdemeanor battery and booked in jail.

And the kid wasn't charged with operating a device that is banned by both the FCC and FAA during flight. Flight attendants should have fed that old man a viagra and taken turns blowing him in the lavatory for hitting that punk kid.

Is it really a banned device? I figured after mythbusters proved that cell phones and other electronic devices have no effect on flight controls, all of that hooplah would've been over.

I guess that's one way to win a game of trading punches.

Last flight I took, they asked everybody to turn off electronics during takeoff. Then during flight they allowed them to be turned back on as long as the radios(cell/wifi) were turned off.

The FAA regulation basically says that if the airline doesn't say it's ok, then it is illegal. As far as the airlines go, it's cheaper and easier to just ban the devices than to test them and approve them for use. As far as I know, FCC still has an outright ban on mobile phone usage in aircraft.

Mythbusters has been wrong before. I'll look for that episode. I've worked with a FAA DER who has been testing electromagnetic interference on flight controls for 12 years, since the FAA started requiring it for FADEC (full authority digital engine control) equipped rotorcraft. He says he's never seen any effect either, but that doesn't stop him, or the FAA from looking.

Edit: I should clarify, he doesn't look necessarily for interference from mobile phones or the bandwidths mobile phones operate on, but all devices across the full EM spectrum that could cause interference in engine controls or communications.

I leave both my work and personal cell phones on when I fly, i just turn them to silent and the planes never had any issues. Its all bullshit if you ask me.
