Made up numbers to just prove a point:

Sale price of combo deal $90

HD cost on nailer - $60
HD cost on hose - $10

Profit - $20

If you return the hose for the retail price of $30 then you basically bought the nailer for $60, and the net profit is now $0 for HD

However HD will now resell that hose for $30. Their cost basis is still $10 and they end up with a net profit of $20... Nothing changes

Additionally, since they were only willing to give you a gift card for the $30, you are forced to either spend it in their store or let it expire.

They know exactly what deals like this are costing them, I guarantee you.

Where did the coupon come in? I didnt use any coupon. It was listed for $71.xx on their site. Returning something for full price you used a coupon isnt right. The coupon would be void in the manufacturers eyes because the store didnt sell item.

home depot is going to ask for a receipt when he tries to return it.
he wont have one for the hose so they may offer him store credit. if home depot cared, enough they would require a receipt or no return/exchange at all.
