Houston Police Officer Fatally Shoots Unarmed Double Amputee in a Wheelchair

The cop had a leg up on the man and he was already partially disarmed.

It was a close quarters area, could have been dark inside also, ya just can't fix crazy sometimes. One armed people are extra strong with the limbs they have left. Without being there, it's too hard to judge right or wrong. I can't see trying to taser someone a foot away while he has you against a wall kicking at you and trying to stab at you in the reduced light. I'm not saying the officer was right or wrong or the guy deserved to die, I can sure see how easy it could happen if any of us were in the same situation.

The point I am trying to make is with all the uncertainties of what kind of response you will get, you are definately taking a risk by making the call. As much as people gripe about poor service, why call when you have no idea what kind of officer with what attitude, what level of training, and with what disposition, ethics, etc.

You are not going to get a trained robot with a guaranteed outcome that is what you want.

And another point, why the hell would someone call the police for someone wheelchair bound?

Is a facility so unprepared to deal with people that they have to call 911? Either the guy was a real threat, or they over-reacted by calling police, then the police over-reacted.

Again, I don't have all the answers because I wasn't there, but there is something here that doesn't add up.

I am not allowing the care facility to abdicate their responsibility for controlling a situation, but the fact remains that once the police are involved it is now in their hands.

I understand that completely, civilians try to intervene and it can cause a situation to spin out of control. However, once the PD is involved it's now in their hands and they ultimately have full responsibility for handling a situation (pending outside/extreme influences)

I did see an episode of COPS once awhile back about a dude in a wheelchair firing a gun at random people in the middle of a busy street. I don't remember what they did, but they ended up subduing him w/o a fatality.

And there have been so many Taser revisions, we now are supposed to shoot in the back to avoid the cardiac area due to all the flak about it causing heart issues.

We can't use it on the elderly, pregnant, young, and those with health issues.

It is about to the point where we have to call a time out, have them complete a medical survey, and then call time in and go into action.

With this guy having obvious medical and mental issues, I doubt the officer could have been in policy to use taser.

You see the irony here? You dont want to taze them because you dont want to hurt them...yet you shoot and kill them instead. Sound logic...

The officer had seen a person stabbed to death and shot the perp while he was stabbing the victim.
Flash forward,
he goes in with weapon drawn rounds a dark corner, flashlight out left hand, weapon in the other, the crazy comes at him from the dark and pins him on the wall with the wheel chair and is stabbing toward him with something in his hand. The officer has a both hands filled and is thinking back to the guy with the knife, so he eliminates the threat. I can see how it can happen.

While working CPS and dealing with 12 to 17 year old kids who'd seen it all. A horror movie couldn't do some of their case studies justice. They had all their limbs and some of them would try to hurt you if they ever had the chance and all we had in our defense were our hands to administer a standing/sitting/lying/carry basket or a tether, blanket or straight jacket. If something wrong happened, because they were minors the state would believe them first over any staff testimonial. This cop is a fucking pussy and a murderer. Don't care what situation he was in.

He has one arm. How does he "pin the cop in" if he's using his ONE ARM to "wield a deadly Bic Pen"?

2 years ago i had some crazy fuck try and stab me with a loaded syringe. I thought it was a bic pen but i caught a better look at it as he was coming at me and was able to push him away. You just dont know what crazy shit people will do to you. I always look at whats in peoples hands now. Never assume.

How do you pin a cop into a corner if:

1. You have one arm and that arm is currently holding a pen
2. You need at least one arm to move the wheelchair forward.
3. Said arm is busy with either the pen or the wheels.

I'm not seeing a threat. You put your foot on the chair and shove it backwards. Problem and threat handled. If this cop has been so traumatized that anyone holding something in proximity of him is a lethal threat that must be shot, it's time for him to give up the gun. Maybe working in a nice location where no one has sharp objects would be best.

Maybe the stuffed animal isle of Walmart.

Jyro is really reaching on this one. There is no scenario that justifies this killing. None. The man was not a threat. You can stretch it to appear that he was but it's just not the case. Tip the wheelchair over, baby threat neutralized. Cops need a reality check.
