Don't mean to burst anyone's dreams, but unless there is family money to support something like karting - I wouldn't suggest it. Sponsors are few and far between, even the best karters are now turning wrenches and acting as coaches for younger, parent funded drivers.

I raced karts for 5 years and at any level it is not cheap. Being competitive isn't cheap either.

      He's 5'9" and about 190. He's never worked a clutch before.

Which is exactly why he hasn't gotten involved in it. I knew all that.

Karting is cheaper than most racing. I Know.

A Yamaha powered, newer Kart, with a centrifugal force clutch is about $2500.00.
Set of Tires runs about $250.00, and I go through 2 sets a season. 18 races plus practice sessions. Yamaha's run on our track about 75 to 80 mph on the long stright before the brakeing point on the banked turn. Not real fast but before you run you have got to learn to walk. That would be with starter and some extra stuff.

I run out of the back of my truck. I have seen some people spend $10,000 on a trailer and a kid kart ( 5 to 7 year olds ). Kid karts are Limited kart size and restricted gearing and restricted 50 cc motor. Sometimes I wish I had their racing budget. Club member race fee is $37.00 or $38.00 per race. Points pay top 3 places at the end of the year. Metals / ribbons awards for each race top 3. 3 series of 6 races each for placks to hang on the wall.

Of course you will need the rookie repair stuff such as gears ($12.00 ) chain ( $25.00 ) for your off track adventures as you learn to drive. Helmet ( whats your head worth ) driving gloves, neck brace. No exposed skin is the rule.

If you watch E bay or Craiglist you can get a deal on a Kart off one of those people who spent $$$ only to find out that the only way you get better at driving fast is seat time.

We race about every other weekend, generally. Nights when it's hot and days in the early spring and late fall.

            Drive fast.

Mine has an old GXSR1100 engine on it. Not clutch skills is a deal breaker.

Speed zone will be very boring if you've ever been to a real kart track. You can basically stay on the gas the entire time. DKC is where it's at as long as he's allowed to ride the adult karts...I'm not sure on age restrictions. Me and some friends may go this Saturday if y'all want some competition from people who only go so often.

Yeah, it's still too much for us right now plus with my daughter's constant doctor's appointments and her recent diagnosis, we just can't commit to something like that right now. Oh, and he'll be driving next year so at this point I think he would rather us spend the coin on a car.

DKC is the best for sure, I took my daughters there (13 and 15) and we had a blast for relatively cheap too.
