A male, and veteran officer probably would have died in this situation also. Being a female doesn't make you less likely to dodge bullets. Its sad, but no way really she could have prevented this with the husband returning like that.

I hate this, people are so fucking stupid. If you want to kill yourself just do it and dont drag other people into the mess with you. Domestics are always the worst calls and so unpredictable.

We have districts as most places do. When you get a call in your district its your deal to handle and has nothing to do with anything else. The one thing I like about my city is the fact that it is small and other officers are usually very close and we keep an eye on each other. Even with that though you never know when its gonna go down badly.

The guy we lost on fathers day was 6' 7" or so, solid muscle, swat team, instructor, you name it. It is all very random but there are things you can do to lessen the odds and be safe, you just never know though. In these times where everyone want to second and third guess the police you get officers that may second guess themselves. All it takes is a split second.

Hence my statement about sending a female rookie.

If someone is intent on killing you, then you don't have a chance. Like those four officers in Washington.

I disagree....I have had many people (well, animals) whose sole intent was to kill me and I am still here. But I understand your point.

Updates, looks like she saved the life of a child in the process.

Smith, 24, had been dispatched about 7:30 p.m. to take a domestic violence report at the Arbrook Park Apartments in the 3800 block of Mahonia Way, near Interstate 20 and Collins Street.

When she arrived, she encountered Kimberly Deshay Carter, 29, and her daughter. Minutes later, the suspect, Barnes Samuel Nettles, 38, arrived at the apartment with a gun. As he began shooting, Officer Smith moved toward the girl to cover her, Arlington police said.

Nettles fatally shot Smith. The young girl escaped.

Nettles approached a bedroom and fatally shot Carter. He then went into the living room and fatally shot himself.
and this guy sounds like a real winner...

Police arrested Nettles in September after he allegedly assaulted Carter's mother, Leah Richardson, and sister, Candace Washington, at the Arlington apartment.

Nettles and Carter were dating at the time, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. But Richardson wanted Carter to end the relationship after discovering Nettles was a sex offender, the document said.

When Nettles saw Richardson and Washington leave the apartment on Sept. 14, he ran up the stairs and tried to choke Richardson, the affidavit said.

Richardson told police that Nettles tried to throw her over the railing of the stairs and that he threatened to kill her and her husband.

Nettles hit Richardson, causing injury to her hand and wrist, before she managed to push him away, the affidavit said. Washington also received injuries in the scuffle, according to the document.

There was also a call to the apartment in August regarding a threat.

Nettles had prior convictions for rape of a child, domestic violence assault, burglary and failure to register as a sex offender, police documents said.

In 1997, Nettles pled guilty and was convicted of second degree rape of a child in Tacoma, Washington. No details were available about the offense but court records note that it is defined as a “kidnapping offense.” In 2008, he was convicted of failing to register as a sex offender in Washington State. In June 2010, he was released from supervision by the department of corrections though he was still required to register as a sex offender. He registered as a sex offender in Arlington on Aug. 17, according to Richard.

Arbrook Park Apartments According to Washington state records, Nettles also has a 1995 conviction for attempted burglary. He also has misdemeanor arrests in driving without a license, assault and reckless driving.
