I have traded quite a few cars in the past. I never said there was a dollar amount when the trade was straight across. Just go to the title office with your old vehicle information, the new vehicle and walk away. This is the cheapest route I have found.
When I traded my fox for a 97 Tahoe I was only out like 65$ and got new plates on the spot.
Since the car is out of state, go get it inspected first, get what they call a green sheet and take that with you to the title office. Its just a piece of paper with the vin and vehicle info on it that was checked by a "state inspector" so the lady wont have to get up and go look at the vehicle and verify the vin on her own. Other than that All you need is the title. Ive been asked a few times for a form the other person was supposed to fill out and I just say I cant get a hold of them anymore, they note it and submit it anyway. Then the title shows up.
I always write on the bill of sale that I paid 100 bucks for the car I'm trading. Except I don't live in Texas...
Yeah they no longer allow that in Texas. They go based off of the value on the car. I tried this last year and they said they can't do this anymore due to the fact that almost everyone does this to get out of paying sales tax. So now they just go based off of the value on the vehicle.
As far as trading goes, each person signs their title as they would when they sell the car. Each person then writes a bill of sale stating they traded their vehicle for the other persons. I usually do mine like this:
I Johnathon Jones am trading my 2007 Ford F-150 Ext Cab with the last 8 of the vin ending in: __________ for John Smiths 2003 Ford Mustang Cobra with the last 8 of the vin ending in _________ on 9/9/2012 at 1:16.
Like the person above me says your going to need a VI-30 form or "Green Sheet" when getting the vehicle inspected so you can register it.
Once you've got it inspected with the "Green Sheet" go to your tax office with that form, your proof of insurance, title, and bill of sale.
From there its smooth sailing.
You do not need a bill of sale but never hurts to have one. Mine always say no warranty. Print out two U-130 forms from the Tex DOT site and fill it out for both parties. It has a blank for even trade. You will probably walk out for under 100.00. Put your vin number, make, and model in the U-130 you are keeping or just make a copy of your title so you will have the information.
This will be the no hassle way to do it. My tax office will tell you to get bent without the U-130.

Yes on sales you get ripped off but when trading vehicles it's still about $65, you only pay the normal state fees and taxes. There aren't any sales taxes since it wasn't a sale. This is assuming it's an across the board trade. You can pay tax if you want to fill out the paperwork and admit to bringing cash to the table.

I have never had that form. I just tell them I cant get ahold of the other party. They desk clerk tells me it might get rejected but we can try. Few weeks later I always have a title in my mail box.
Its not what you paid anymore. The tax is based on what the car is worth according to there computers. When I got my Fox registered Bill of sale said $500. I still got charged $245. I asked why and that's what they told me. My Honda was even more
