It can run on 87, premium will get you slightly better performance, but is not required.

so, the difference you make in a couple MPG gets made in the price of fuel.
They overlook it because you couldn't be more wrong in this case. EB requires 87 octane, premium not required. I've put 32k hard miles on my EB since 04/11 and have only run higher than 87 when I tow a boat or trailer full of motorcycles long distance.

There is so much incorrect rumor floating about the EB, it's almost laughable.

To the OP, go to one of the big f150 forums and you'll find more info than you can read on the EB. There are countless raging debates between the EB and 5.0 on f150online and f150forum.

Hard to go wrong with either one. Down the road, I think a twin turbo V6 is going to be a maintenance headache at 100k+ miles and I'd rather have a relatively simple N/A V8 at that point. If you're going to get rid of it before that point, I say get whatever you like but the EcoBoost will probably have a better resale.

I've already seen some really mild combos run mid-11s in the 5.0 trucks though...

Also, OP, you'll hear a few stories like the one above where someone knows someone that knows someone that has an EB and they're getting 23+ MPG. What they're not telling you is that they managed 23+ on one stretch of a trip once during the life of the truck. They're probably averaging below 20 over the life of the truck but they won't admit that because 23 just sounds so much better.

For the most part, that's the biggest complaint about the EB. Yes, you can get really great numbers out of it if you really baby the truck. For most of us doing a lot of city driving, you're looking at 17-19 mpg. If you putt around at 55 mph and never, ever use the go-pedal, you can easily see 23-25 mpg. I drive my truck pretty hard and my overall average is in the low 17's (lots of city driving). For comparison, driving a 5.4 the way I drive this truck netted low 14's. I have no idea how I would do in a 5.0 F150 because I've never driven one.

Towed my 24 Blue Wave Pure Bay 60 miles with a lot of stop and go traffic yesterday and got 12mpg. On the way home I took it easy and got 21. I average 18 mpg with my 2011 Ecoboost SCRew Lariat 2 wheel drive. I love the truck but just for grins I would like to hook up a 5.0 to the boat to see how it feels. Like mentioned above you do not need premium fuel. When towing I'll run 89 most of the time just to play it safe. If I was going to keep the truck for 100k I'd probably lean toward the 5.0 but since I'll be in a new one by 60k I wanted to try the Ecoboost.

I drove my 5.0 F-150 to southern Illinois yesterday. I was doing about 70-75 most of the way and managed just 17.6mpg despite all the wind and rain. I'm very interested to see what it does driving back without all that weather. There was a 50 mile stretch in Illinois that is limited to 65mph. I estimate I was getting above 20mpg at that point but I didn't reset the calculator to get a good reading.

Ecoboost mileage can greatly vary with the amount of ethanol in the fuel.

That is true of any engine.

True yet it seems to greatly affect the EB motors more significantly.

I've got an ecoboost with 10k miles and I've loved it every second I've owned it. The honest truth is I get 18.5 to 19mpg around town driving 75 to 80 on the highway. The best I've seen on a strickly highway trip is 21mpg. I have a 4x4 crewcab. So someone that only has an extended cab 2wheel drive could see 23mpg. Nothing beats the seat of the pants feel of an ecoboost. I can break the tires loose going 20 to 25mph when I stand on it. Of course all the guys in the 5.0's will tell you their truck is just as quick, but I've never been passed by a 5.0 going light to light. I think they are just jealous. Another thing to think about is resale value. The ecoboost is doing really and you can't find a used one for a decent price anywhere. Half the time at dealerships you can buy a new truck cheaper than a used ecoboost.

Time will tell put I think you're going to be suprised with these trucks. I've already come across some high mileage ecoboost and they are doing awesome. Ford has had less problems out of these engines than any new engine they've produced in some time. It's not like they run a crazy amount of boost and the direct injection system runs very low psi compared to diesel trucks that last hundreds of thousands of miles. Are things going to break. Of course but thats true on any car or truck.

I think you have a valid point there. They are very popular as new trucks and that usually translates to very popular on the used market. The durability is still the real question mark, but I think they'll do well.

This was going to be the gist of my response. I really didn't want any maintenance hassles out of twin turbos when the warranty was over. I plan on keeping this truck 10 years.
