  • Opinions on the 5.0 vs. Ecoboost F150

I'm curious how you ecoboost owners like your trucks and which option you would choose and why... The mileage looks to be pretty close on both engines...I was expecting to see a little bigger gap, and they seem to be fairly similar in price...

Except forced induction! Lol. Amy's current truck has the 5.4, but I was considering giving the new ecoboost a shot. That would be the first non v8 I've owned in about 13 or so years!

      **edit**first non V8 gasser...I wasn't thinking about my 05 dodge (cummins).

You can read a lot of opinions here. The Ecooost V6 cost over $1000 more than the 5.0 does. There are mixed reports on mileage.

My personal opinion is that the EB V6 isn't worth the extra cost unless you need the extra HP and torque for towing. The 5.0 is plenty powerful. I'm very happy with mine and there is plenty of modding potential.

What are your real world MPG's and what kind of driving do you do? I am getting close to maybe buying a new truck and can't decide between the Ram 1500 sport crew 4x4 or the F150 FX4 Crew w/ecoboost. I drive 70 miles a day 30%city/70%highway.

            This.

I have been waiting for this discussion to pop up for a while.

Loved my EB. Nothing better than the sound of twin turbos spooling up. Also around here in the mountains it didn't downshift hardly at all, just spooled up. My Chebby downshifts every 2 seconds. Not so much a problem for you flat landers though. lol

This is no joke. I swear, I am about to throw a huge turbo on the 283 in my Jeep, not to build so much power that I will kill myself even quicker than the 250 or so HP in a 2300 lb stripped 90" wheelbase, but because I miss the sound of that boost building. I'm looking to run about 3 lbs of boost, lol. I figure I'll raise it once my $1,000,000 life insurance policy kicks in.
                Just a joke, kids...

I average 22-23 mpg (80% highway) with my ecoboost. Mine is a Lariat 4x4 and I absolutley love this truck.

                  As a reference I owned a 2010 5.4 Lariat 2wd with a superchips programmer and it ran 9.80 in the 1/8.........the ecoboost stock ran a 9.3x!

It tows my racecar with no problem whatsoever also.

It's not all about power but....

                  Get the ecoboost man!

Call Skip and go drive both, then drive the bigger V8, was is it, 6.2 L? Lyn has the 5.4 and when it went in for some warranty work, Skip got her a 5.0 loaner. The 5.0 just "felt" slower. It was like you had to push the gas pedal a lot more to get it going or something.

And if you're buying a truck, who really cares about MPG!

Better yet, get her the Harley Edition F-150, or a Raptor

I looked at the Harley...that thing gets 12 mpg...I can't believe the tree huggers let them make that truck! Lol. Mileage isn't a huge issue, but it's something to consider...the Eco boost doesn't that much better mileage anyway (from what I'm seeing). ...I need to drive one and check it out...that's the first I've heard that the 5.0 has less power than the 5.4...I haven't driven one of those either, so I'll have to test drive one and see.

Plus, best reason to get a V8 vs. a V6, dual exhaust! I love a nice deep rumble with a V8 and after market exhaust!

My basis is just the seat of the pants dyno, no idea what the HP/Tq is for Lyn's 2010 vs any 2012 model, or any track times with either year. I've driven a couple 5.0 trucks too when the Stang was in the shop, they just feel less responsive compared to Lyn's 5.4 I imagine the 6.2 feels pretty decent under full throttle.

plus you have to use premium fuel in a turbo motor, which is something a LOT of people are overlooking. Premium is over $4 now.

and, you have to use premium instead of 87 octane.

so, the difference you make in a couple MPG gets made in the price of fuel.
