An amber lamps was stolen from medics in SE Dallas.

A man was arrested late Sunday night after police say he stole an ambulance so he could drive to a relative's house.

About 11 p.m., the ambulance was dispatched to the 2800 block of Peavy Rd., near Buckner Blvd. But when paramedics arrived at the address, they couldn't find anyone who needed help.

The paramedic left the ambulance parked with the ignition on while they searched for any potential victims. While they were looking, Dallas police say a man on crutches got into the unlocked ambulance and drove away.

The paramedics immediately called police and got them to start following the ambulance using its GPS-based automatic vehicle tracking system.

A squad car followed the vehicle until it stopped in the 1800 block of Alaska Ave in south Dallas, about 12 miles away.

As the man parked the ambulance, officers swooped in and arrested him.

The man, who was using crutches, told officers he needed to get to his grandmother's house.

Police arrested him for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

He went to jail for the theft. In this case it's a felony as opposed to a mr meanor.

We have trolls that call the ambulance to bring them to the ER for a bogus claim so they can walk across the street to the grocery store and use their welfare cards to get their groceries and then come back to the ER and expect Social Services to get them a ride back home...fucking makes me sick.

Law enforcement does it all the time too. As does the fire department. I seriously doubt anything happens to the medic. I don't think anything should, either.

A - they are diesels. Excessive starts shorten the life.
B - they are going out to emergency situations. If you have someone in cardiac arrest, for instance, or a life threatening GSW, would you kill it and lock the door so you can take your sweet ass time getting the patient to the hospital?
