got an ins check AFTER new roof

I got a new roof last month and have already paid my part and wrote over an insurance check. This week I received another check from insurance paid directly to me (last one had my name and roof co). What am I supposed to do with this? It's the same amount as my deductible...

I had this happen with my auto insurance. Sent me a check for $300.00 with nothing enclosed. I figured it'd be a good idea to call so it wouldn't bite me in the ass later. I talked to my agent and she said to keep it. Weird. I'd suggest at least calling.

That's probably your "depreciation" check. They send that after they're satisfied the work has been done. Enjoy it!

It is an adjustment for depreciation.

An insurance company determines what percentage of your roof life was remaining before the damage - and then initially only pay you that amount. For example; Let's say your roof were 25 years old and the insurance company said it should have lasted 50 years. They would initially only pay for half of the cost.

There are two common types of insurance. ACH(actual cash value) and Replacement Cost. If you have ACH then you only get paid for the value of the roof that was damaged. In the example above it was half.

With replacement cost they will pay for the full cost - but do it in two installments and only pay the second installment after the work is done.
