  • 2013 Explorer Sport 365hp 16/22mpg

The 2013 Ford Explorer Sport goes on sale this fall, packing a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, premium interior features and sporty (sort of) exterior design elements. And while Ford originally told us that the Sport would produce "at least 350 horsepower," we've now learned that the top-trim Explorer will churn out 365 hp and 360 pound-feet of torque. If that sounds familiar, it's because those are the same totals found in the Taurus SHO sedan, which shares its engine.

365 hp and 360 lb-ft are a welcome improvement over the 290 hp and 255 lb-ft present in the naturally aspirated V6 model. Fuel economy doesn't suffer horribly, either. The Sport is officially rated at 16/22 miles per gallon (city/highway), compared to 17/23 in the regular, all-wheel-drive model. For reference, Ford points out that the Explorer Sport is more efficient than both the V8-powered Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango.

When it hits dealerships, the 2013 Explorer Sport will be priced from $40,720, not including $825 for destination.

they should make a Escape Sport with this same motor and AWD. thing would be badass!

Ed Zachary. Wait 2-3 years and buy one for $25,000 that still has a huge chunk of warranty and is a CPO car.

This vehicle gets less power (by torque) than the EB V6 in the F-150 and it weighs about 500lbs less than that F-150 and has better aerodynamics, but it only gets the same fuel economy??

I think Ford can do better.

Fuck that price tag. Went with my sis 2 weeks ago to get her a new '12 F150 5.0 supercrew xlt that stickered @ $37,xxx and we got it at $29,xx OTD. Car prices are crazy now days. Used are even more retarded right now.

And her truck is rated at 16/21 and weighs 1,000 lbs more...

Im sure your paying for the same motor that is in the Taurus SHO and that car starts at 40k. A regular Explorer starts at 29k and a regular Taurus is is 26k, so take your pic a 40k SHO or 40k Explorer Sport if you want to go fast with the Ecoboost.

Guess that'd be me. I was actually debating on waiting for a V-6 Ecoboost in the Explorer, but had decided they were never gonna do it so I went ahead and bought a 2012 for my wife. Wish I'd have known!

As far as prices, if you want a new SUV you really don't have many options. Everything else is priced pretty similar. If you look at Tahoe's the damn things are $55k+ with barely any options. Of course just like Ford MSRP doesn't mean that's what you pay.

I won't go into the buying used thing to save money - I used to swear by it as well. I'm just to a point where I look at things a little differently.

All that said, we've got about 10k miles on our Explorer and are really happy with it so far. We aren't getting the 25mpg freeway that the sticker claims, but I pretty much expect that these days.
