FFFFFF...Took the Challenger in to Huffines Plano for an oil change. Its under warranty so I let them do it so there's no drama on warranty stuff. Well after a nap , I realized it was 1.5 hours since I got there so I go see what's up...The service writer tells me, Oh, sorry, guess we stripped the drain plug, we're putting a helicoil in it now..FFFFFFFFFFFF. I am so pisssed... The helicoil is GOING to fail at some point...

They also make self tapping oversize drain plugs, it really isn't a big deal.Originally posted by racrguyWhat's your beef with NPR, because their listeners are typically more informed than others?Originally posted by racrguyVoting is a constitutional right, overthrowing the government isn't.

Shame on manufactures for using aluminum pans without steel inserts from day 1. Nothing like having the car out of warranty and a customer that has never brought it in for service at the dealership and the one time they do, bam that bitched is stripped. "OMG, Look what you did! I want free shits!"

Helicoil is ALWAYS weaker than the parent material. An insert such as a TimeSert can be as strong as the original connection if installed correctly. IMO, Helicoils should never be used in high stress areas such as head bolts / spark plug threads. An oil pan drain plug is probably just fine but I wouldn't use a Helicoil just on general standards. There are better choices.
