  • Dealer stripped the oil drain plug...

FFFFFF...Took the Challenger in to Huffines Plano for an oil change. Its under warranty so I let them do it so there's no drama on warranty stuff. Well after a nap , I realized it was 1.5 hours since I got there so I go see what's up...The service writer tells me, Oh, sorry, guess we stripped the drain plug, we're putting a helicoil in it now..FFFFFFFFFFFF. I am so pisssed... The helicoil is GOING to fail at some point...

It depends on if they actually used a helicoil or not. Most of them use a steel insert that works great and is better than the stupid tapped aluminum pan ever was.

They also make self tapping oversize drain plugs, it really isn't a big deal.

            Correct.

Shame on manufactures for using aluminum pans without steel inserts from day 1. Nothing like having the car out of warranty and a customer that has never brought it in for service at the dealership and the one time they do, bam that bitched is stripped. "OMG, Look what you did! I want free shits!"

And you normally find out what some grease monkey did to your car 3-6 months later, when they can easily deny it. I've been on both sides. At least in this case, they admitted the screwed up.

                Not directed at you Keith.

Helicoil is ALWAYS stronger than parent material. When I worked defense we used them in most threaded holes from the beginning new state for this reason. If done right...no worries.

Helicoil is ALWAYS weaker than the parent material. An insert such as a TimeSert can be as strong as the original connection if installed correctly. IMO, Helicoils should never be used in high stress areas such as head bolts / spark plug threads. An oil pan drain plug is probably just fine but I wouldn't use a Helicoil just on general standards. There are better choices.
