Man hit by suspected drunk driver while trying to pick fight with cop
RENTON, Wash. - A man was struck and seriously injured by a suspected drunk driver Wednesday evening as he stood in the middle of the street trying to pick a fight with a police officer, authorities said.
The drama began Wednesday evening at about 8:50 p.m. when police received reports of a man creating a disturbance in the 1100 block of Grady Way, said Cmdr. Clark Wilcox of the Renton police.
An officer arrived at the scene within minutes and found a man in his 20s. As the officer approached him, the man began to walk away towards SW Grady Way then stepped into the roadway as traffic whizzed by.
The officer tried to get the man out of the roadway by talking to him, but the man refused to listen and or leave the roadway.
As the officer approached the man, he turned towards the officer and positioned his body in an offensive fighting stance.
Meanwhile, cars and trucks were approaching the officer and the man as he stood in the eastbound lanes of the roadway.
The officer was able to divert several vehicles around the man and himself so they would not be hit. But as the officer was requesting additional police units he saw an approaching Honda CRV that wouldn't slow down, and the driver did not appear to see the officer or the man in the roadway.
The officer was able to jump clear from the oncoming vehicle at the last moment, but the man in the roadway was struck and seriously injured.
Medics were called to the scene, and the man was rushed to Harborview Medical Center suffering from head injuries.
The woman who was driving the car was uninjured.
Wilcox said it appeared she was driving under the influence of alcohol. She was arrested and faces possible charges of DUI vehicle assault.
