well my personal dream car in high school was a '93 Cobra and i showed him a foxbody and he wasnt very impressed... he does like the older style though and im sure as he gets older will learn to appreciate it and like it even more.

My first car was a 67 Mustang coupe that I got for my 15th bday. Bought it for $350 from a shipping company that used it to pull forklifts out of the mud. It was ugly but I loved that car and everyone thought it was the shit (until another classmate with rich parents bought him a fully restored sweet ass 69 Firebird vert).

I put an old tired 302 from a Granada in it. Was just fast enough to be fun but slow enough to keep me out of any serious trouble. More importantly, I enjoyed the time working on the car until I turned 16.

I plan to do the same with my son when he gets that age.

My stepmom bought the 82 regal I have in 84. She gave it to me in 93 (age 13 then, its the first car I ever drove without sitting in someones lap etc. at age 9) after she'd driven it, my dad used it for a commute car, and a friend of his used it for daily transportation before letting it sit in our shop yard for 3 or 4 years. The paint was baked, the Landau top fried, had 14's with solid hubcaps, rotted bumper fillers, etc. I jumped it off, drove it to put fresh gas in running on 4 of the 6 cylinders, and took it to the house to tinker with after school. Fresh tuneup parts got it running decent again, ripped the top and trim off, put a set of wheel on it from the salvage yard, and drove it through most of high school. Wrecked it my senior year and took autobody after I graduated. My dad really never had much influence on the car, but more on my learning how to work on things earlier in life. He'd give a little instruction and I'd pretty well take it upon myself to learn what needed to be done. I still take that approach today with my customers cars. Anyway, good luck with the project. It's easy to get overwhelmed, and I hope your son respects what yall build. I drove the shit outa mine, when it broke I fixed it. Set of head gaskets, couple trans installs, and some minor stuff along the way.

While my stepmom owned it, it was stolen twice, had the passenger rear quarter replaced before she got it, and had head gaskets popped 2 times (second time was when stolen), I popped a set a third time in my ownership (4.1 v-6 had bad problem of this).

My favorite car growing up was a friends project with his dad, it was an 84 z28 with a 400sbc and it was done right.. I like the g-body ideas, but the c3/c4 vettes seem like a bad idea.. Chevy trucks u can't go wrong though..

An 80 Malibu may be a choice. Also a 73-74 nova

- 1st or 2nd gen Mustang
- Later 2nd gen F-body (Camaro or Firebird) **I still predict these will be a good longer term investment**
- Late 70's G-body (there's a cool example on this site...Harrison?)
- 67-72 C10 (I'm biased here)...one of the easiest vehicles on the planet to work on and all parts are cheap, cheap, cheap.
- 67-72 Ford F100 or F150 - Similar to above, but parts aren't nearly as cheap...however not as often done and maybe a little more unique these days too.
- VW Bug?? Again, one of the easist out there to work on and can be pretty cool looking when done right, but also never going to be a powerhouse to promote trouble with a young driver.
