Jr. starts kindergarten next monday. I have enrolled him to be in a program that 1/2 the day is in english and 1/2 in spanish. the class will be a mix of native english speakers and native spanish speakers. I am quite excited about it. Is rosetta stone a good way for me to learn spanish so i will be able to help him with homework and such? thanks.

Not sure. I know that bilingual kids, and kids in bilingual homes automatically get enrolled in that program at the Kindergarten level.

My son isn't in such a program though. At least, not that I'm aware of anyways. But he's at a new school this year, and it hasn't started yet.

In any Spanish class, you will only learn Castilian Spanish. He'll learn Mexican/Spanglish outside the classroom.

The consistent lowest grades in both years of Spanish were fluent in Mexican.

Castillian teaches vosotros, we all learned ustedes. it also consists of speaking with a lisp, again not taught in HEB. I can't speak for all of texas, but you're wrong saying Castillian is all that is taught.

I taught Spanish in Keller and was an inclusion teacher in HEB. While vosotros is indeed part of Castillian, we were given the option to not teach that form. They use Uds. as well. It's 'proper' Spanish-that's what they teach. The difference between Castillian and Spanglish is often compared to the difference between 'Shakespearean' language and 'slang'.

Gotcha. I did some more reading and basically found that they're teaching whatever dialect they prefer. I must have gotten the tex mex teacher, because she taught only uds and told us vos was useless except in Spain and extremely formal. We did however learn nouns that appear not to be Castilian, but that was a long time ago
