Unfortunately the part of the story I need to pass
Judgement is missing. If this was a major roadway of 45 or 50 mph then it sucks but more then likely unavoidable. If this was a small residential street then the cop should have taken his ass beating as he should have been driving slow enough to have avoided any harm to anyone.

If the cop had time to purposely lay the bike down he had time to react, which means there was at least 2-3 seconds from the time that he saw the child until the accident. I'd take a guess that he had to be traveling pretty fast to decided to do that instead of hitting the brakes, since 2-3 seconds on the brakes would reduce speed greatly if he was traveling slower. Now, if the street limit was, say 50mph, he would probably be traveling close to the speed limit. If it was 30, he would have been traveling in excess of the speed limit. Excess speed means he is partially responsible at the minimum.
If the cop was excessively speeding, then he was negligent, and he should get a bullet in the head. If he was abiding by the law by traveling the proper speed, it was justified.
Either way, he'll just get some 'extra training' and nothing will ever come of it.......

When I drive down a residential street I'm ready for something like that regardless of parents watching the kid or not. Everyone that has kids knows they sometimes do crazy things so driving down a residential street you should always be on the look out for a kid to bolt suddenly not to mention doing 25 on a bike the Dahm thing stops pretty instantly he not only hit his brakes but laid it down and still hit her which means he was booking it. Which leads me to belive that he was speeding down a residential street or was on a busier street. The latter is more then likely what happened but around here I have seen cops doing 45 through the neighborhood so who knows.

When I am driving down the road I am pretty much paranoid, looking for things that might happen. I have been in several major accidents, rear ended once where a girl hit me doing around 55 as I sat in a left turning lane, and one head-on where a girl ran a red light and me head on doing around 40 as I was turning left at a signal. I had one when I was young where the 'washboard' bumps on a gravel road caused me to lose control and slide off the road into a tree. I rear-ended a drunk redneck that locked up his brakes without having brake lights one night.
When I drive now, I spend the entire time LOOKING for shit to happen, and am constantly prepared to react. It is one of the reasons I very seldom speed these days. I practice situational awareness to the point of paranoia.
