ROCKWALL – The Garland Police Department’s Bomb Squad has been called to Summer Ridge Assisted Living Center during the past hour to investigate a reportedly smoking grenade found there, across F.M. 740/Ridge Rd. from the Kroger Food Store.
Rockwall Police cars and two police department helicopters are on the scene.
According to Rockwall City Council member Michelle Smith, she was told a live grenade was found and someone pulled the pin, causing it to smoke.
Residents of the Center have been moved to safety and there are no reports of injuries.

UPDATE at 4 pm from Rockwall Police Department:
“On Thursday, August 16, 2012 at approximately 1:21 pm, The Rockwall Police Department received a call about a possible explosive device located at a nursing care facility in the 3000 Block of Ridge Road.
Officers arriving on the scene discovered what appeared to be an explosive device in a former resident’s room. The device which was described as a hand grenade was discovered by family members who were cleaning out the resident’s room. Nursing care facility officials contacted the Rockwall Police Department. Police officers on the scene were advised by family members they believed the device was a practice grenade from the Korean War. After securing the area and moving the residents to another wing in the facility, the Garland Police Department was notified and their Explosive Ordnance Unit responded to the scene. The device was removed from the facility and was then transported to a safe and remote location where it was destroyed. There were no injuries or property damage and all facility residents were safely returned to their rooms.”
