  • West Nile has hit too close to home...

My boss, a healthy guy, went into the ER on Sunday night. For a day or so they did not know what was wrong. I have been filling in for him ever since. Today we learned he is on life support and has been diagnosed with West Nile and it does not look good.

He has been a great manager and all of the people that work for him really think he is one of the best. He's more than just a manager, but a friend to us. We're all just shocked. He lives in North Carolina BTW. I'm starting to get paranoid about the mosquitoes now.

My wife works for a Doc in the box and she said they get positives for West Nile almost daily. (FtW/Keller)

    I hope he pulls through.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

What is his approximate age? I've heard that it really doesn't effect people to that degree unless they're elderly, young, or have compromised immune systems?
How do we forget ourselves? How do we forget our minds?

I think he was in his mid 40's. As far as I know he was healthy and active. Lately though our work stresses, especially at his level, are absolutely crushing. Now I have been asked to fill his role besides the already overwhelming load of work my whole team faces.

That's what the media was saying for so long, and even the doctors I saw said the same thing. They all told me there's no way it could be what was making me sick, even though the symptoms were all there. It was 9 days after them taking my blood when the tests came back positive, and I was better by then. The lady from the health dept that called (and asked me 50 questions about where I'd been, what times of day, symptoms, etc) told me she has heard the exact same thing from many of her cases - the docs missed it completely. It's not like they could do anything about it, but you'd think they would at least know enough to not dismiss it so quickly in young, healthy people.

The media is busy talking about the spraying now, but I have seen them show one story about an otherwise healthy teenage girl who got it and it attacked her brain and she's partially paralyzed, and another healthy couple in their young 20s who both got it and were bad sick for a week. I'm 35 and my old lady is 28, and we were both knocked on our asses for a solid week, too.

Bottom line is everyone should be taking it very seriously.

So he lived in North Carolina and caught it there?

Yes, he lived there, but they aren't sure where he caught it. He had been in the Bahamas the last week of July. They said symptoms may not appear for 3 - 17 days so there is no telling. He was in his mid-late 40's, fairly healthy.

                            Sorry for your loss man....

I don't understand how with today's medicine and technology, we can't find a solution to something that's carried by a fucking mosquito....
