  • Good ideas on outdoor activities spot...

    Okay, I know someone else here had a vacation thread but I really am looking for something a little different and I did not want to hijack.

    Initially I was looking at Red River, NM and Winter Park, CO as I am familiar with these locations. Only problem is I am looking to do this in October and Winter Park is closed. The other issue is I am looking to spend a day 4-Wheeling around the hills and a few trails; Well Red River no longer offers this so I am stuck.

    I am looking for something out of state but not too far, perhaps a neighboring state where we (5 of us) can 4-wheel, fish, drink and have a decent time. We are going for 3 days so not too much time but there is a day there that have no idea what I am going to do. This is why I am asking you, DFWmustangs, where would you go for 3 days that has a small town/resort feel and outdoor activities?

    I looked into Eufaula, OK but they have a lake...that’s about it and I am not sure I will have fun. There are no kids and we are all over 21 so something kind of lively would be nice, any Ideas?

    breckenridge, co. downhill mountain biking, atv trails, fishing, beer, etc...

            Check out Clayton, Oklahoma (Green Acres). Small town, there's a lake nearby, and they have some NICE trails. It's also relatively close so would be ideal for a short trip.



            If I remember correctly, they have a good mix of trails and you could have fun out there in a truck or a tubed out crawler.

              Colorado is my favorite place in the world. However, screw going there for just 3 days. That's way too much driving (you'd need a day on both ends, too). You can still go to most of the low-lying stuff in Oct, but like you already found out, the high altitude stuff is likely going to be getting sketchy in October.

              I'm headed up there Sept 1-10 to camp/fish/hike/offroad. Just had to throw out that solid barg.

                  Well it all started out with me having last visited them about 10 years ago. I went 4-wheeling and what not and there was a shop in town that rented them with a $90 deposit.

                  Well, I couldn’t find anything other than guided tours so I called a shop up and the guy told me all they have is Mule's (4x4) and no one in town has rented 4-wheelers in about 5 years...

                  I really have an itch to go 4-wheeling in the hills again and biking. I can get the biking in Red River but to get the altitude with a good view, a 4-wheel would be better...

                  Not out of the question but lacking a 4-wheel rental close to camp is kind of ruining it for me. I also get that Co. is 11 hrs away and I would spend quite a bit of time driving.

                  Anything closer, I am all ears?

                    Lucky SOB!!! I am telling you, Florida is overrated unless you are talking big fish. Colorado has the best locations though, about 55 outside, clear water and best thing is your maybe 20ft from your room......

                      They only have tours on the website, but I think they rent them. If not lot's of places rent Jeeps in RedRiver. http://www.redriveroffroad.com

                      This summer I hiked Wheeler Peak (Bull Run Route) and it was incredible. So much wildlife when you get up high.

                      Also, if you have kids look up the Red River Community House. They have lots of great activities.

                      When in Red River you have to eat at Sundance - the best Green Chili Enchilada's you'll ever have.

                        Yeah, I have been on a roller coaster of ideas the past couple of days. I spoke with my girl and she is okay with me just taking the guys seeing as the stuff I am looking to get into is mainly "guy" activities. I am leaning towards Red River because of the atmosphere. I also know they have a couple of bars so after the day is over we can knock a couple back...I just hope they have billiards as well.

                        Ultimately, my goal is to get out of Tejas for a couple of days and enjoy some good ol' outdoors fun, its been too long. Red River has fishing as well and that is also something I am looking to do.

                        Unfortunately, I think the reason I am being do indecisive is the lack of night life especially in October when the only thing going on is Oktoberfest. But then again, I am only going for 2 days...

                        Thanks for the advice gentlemen, and if anyone has any other ideas, let me know.

                          That still seems far for only two days of fun.

                          On another note - In my opinion, if you're going for outdoor activities, the "night life" should just consist of getting drunk around a campfire, especially if you have a girl already and don't need to chase tail.

                            This is what I had in mind, only, the mountains are not here...

                            Dont know, might just find something here in Texas as it is a bit far and I could save some cash and just wait until next summer to go up there.
