Yeah since the vettes have door poppers if the battery dies there is a second way to enter the car with a key though the trunk

Do the vettes not have the proximity auto lock/unlock anymore? I thought if the key was in the car, it wouldn't lock? Maybe that's defeated by him leaving it in drive?

Tell him to buy a manual trans next time!

Just for future reference, if you lock your key in a newer vette the cheapest way to get into it is to have a locksmith call the dealership and get the key code off of your vin. Then have them cut a saturn key instead of the chevy key that has the chip in it. Got my vette opened for $2.99 when I set my only set of keys in the hatch and it locked itself. And the keyed lock is hidden above the license plate on the back if you didn't know.

Chevy dealer will charge $50 to cut an actual vette key off the vin.

I'm not sure about it being in drive, mine was a standard. However I do know from experience that the proximity auto unlock does not work with the key in the hatch towards the rear. I popped the hatch, set my key down to get my sunglasses out of my golf bag then shut the hatch and the doors would not open lol.
