We're headed to Destin in a couple of months and I'm glad we're flying. I just need to figure out some family friendly stuff to do down there.
Originally posted by Fastlane View PostI have driven to/through that area a few times. I like the 3rd route. It is a little longer but typically less traffic. I just got back from New Orleans and I hit the Baton Rouge area around rush hour but the traffic wasn't bad. Jump off I10 and pick up I12 just outside of Baton Rouge and the ride to Mississippi is a good deal shorter.
I-12 was great, we did 85 on it the whole way.
Originally posted by mikeb View PostWe usually take 45 from mobile up to meridan when we come back from florida. The worst part of that drive is that about %40 of it is two lane and it's slow, but the rest is 4 lane divided and traffic is good.
I've done 49 from shreveport to layfette and it's a beating.
Seems like i did the mobile -> hattiesburg route once it and it was a 2 lane whipping all of the way.
yea the 2 lanes scared me off the other two routes. We just did 90 mph on 49, made excellent time, but there is literally nothing between Lafayette and Shreveport. Kids were bouncing off the seats an hour from Shreveport so we had to call it a night here. We left Destin around 1030am, took a 45 min lunch in baton rouge and made it here at 7pm so I can't complain about the highway speeds. But that 49 stretch would be unbearable under 80mph.
Originally posted by 90lxstangman View PostAlot of the Baton Rouge traffic issues were secondary to the construction on 10 and 12. Majority of this is taking place in the evenings right now. I've relocated to Baton Rouge in the last few months so I've had the pleasure of dealing with it. Watch out for the LSP on the basin bridge and on 49 they'll pop you for being just above the Speed limit.
yep two were sitting there at the end of the bridge, I can't believe the speed limit is only 60mph on that long bridge.

There's a couple detours you can take to shave off some time in LA too around the 10/49 (or whatever) interchange, I think 180? it saves about 10 mins.
I saw 180 on the map, I'll definitely be taking it next time.
Originally posted by Ted View PostI personally hate 49 in Louisiana from Shreveport to Lafeyette(sp). That's the only stretch of freeway I have ever driven that I have fallen asleep on. That piece of road depresses me.
it is like I10 west of Junction tx.
Originally posted by helosailor View PostI've tried all three, and option 2 is the best, by far. I was in Pensacola for 3 yrs and Jacksonville for 4 yrs. I've probably made the trip 20+ times.
so opt 2 doesn't have a lot of towns?
Originally posted by Rreemo View PostI saw you are taking route #3 above....just FYI, I have some good friends that own a place in SeaGrove (half way between Destin and Panama City), they drive back and forth from their home in Southlake literally about 5-6 times per year (for the past ~8 years now), and they always take that route. When we go visit them out there we take that route as well.
Edit - a little tip/difference in your route....we always take 190 to avoid inner-city Lafayette and also inner city Baton Rouge...coming from the east take a look at your map, you will catch 190 before you get into Baton Rouge, and it will take you up a little north and then straight across west all the way to Opelousas....it will save you a considerable amont of time.
Safe travels.
Thanks. That 180 highway will be on our route next trip.

I usually made the trip in 10:30 to 11:30, depending mainly on traffic through the bigger cities."It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself."

Of course I'm a worthless zombie part of the next day but...I prefer it that way. Although, I think this last time was the last time I'll do that non-stop.

We stopped around hour 7-8 for sanity purposes. Non-stop would be a beating.
On a side note I was impressed with our new enclaves gas mileage. 21.1 mpg hand calculated averaging 76 mph for entire trip.
