I need a change of pace..

As some of y'all know I have been in LMR communications for the last few years. While its been good to me and definitely provided a good life for me, I feel like its not what I'll be happy doing for the next few decades.

I'm kind of at a loss as to what to do, and how to make such a drastic career move. I also fear that any move outside of my current field will come with a rather significant pay cut.

I'm just interested in hearing other people's opinions or perhaps experiences transitioning out of one work field into something entirely different. I don't even know what I want to do, but I know I'm not going to stay happy in my current role.

I'm in this position now and taking time to try different things and once I find my niche, I'll make a full speed run at it.

Skills are somewhat plentiful, but I don't want to find myself in manual labor. I have a BS in communications management, and my dad is a master woodworker who has taught me a lot. I'm trainable and quick to learn, so venturing outside of my current skill set doesn't concern me. I'm just looking for a job that offers a sense of accomplishment at the end of a day and more importantly something I can raise a family on and be happy doing.

I was, then had to return to work due to cost of living. This forced me to drop to part time (part time law is still one hell of a bite to chew) and the company I worked for thought that 75 hour weeks were normal, so I dropped it all. I'm dicking around on my master's right now, but not digging that. Think I just need a break from school for awhile.

The best part is we are supposed to make this decision at 18 and then go to school for it.

It's all relative. Accomplishment is a funny word. I thought when I hit XXK/year and had a few designs under my belt I'd feel accomplished, then I thought when in hit XXK/year and had even more responsibility and work I'd feel better...but still wanting more. And I'm pretty damn young.

For me...I think it'll take high level recognition or running my own multi million dollar business.

So again ...what interests you? What are your goals?

I went to college because that's what I was "supposed" to do. I can't say it was anything but a great choice... But I'm ready to do what I want to do. Just not sure what that is yet :/

My goals are simple. Work enough to have a comfortable life, raise a family, and end my days with a sense of accomplishment. Beyond that I have nothing specific in mind.

And you're right, I have over doubled my salary from when I worked at IBM right out of college, but i still feel that it's not enough -though I can't say if I doubled up again that I would be any happier where I am.
