I live in the wettest dry county on the planet (smith) and it sucks the big hairy meatball. You can't buy a beer to take home, but you can get hammered at every bar and @95% of all the restaurants. Theres only 2 reasons why we're still dry...Green Acres Baptist Church, and the fact that the county sherrif gets a cut of the alcohol sales from damn near every establishment with a liquor license....

      Benefits?

The police department/city will get more income from speeding and DUI cases because people will be forced to drive to get their booze.

I grew up in a wet county, but a dry city: Mesquite!! Plenty of riff raff there.

I was just about to raise this point with Smith. You can't buy beer at a gas station, but you can drink in bars that are private clubs with a membership. People just get trashed at Clicks or Electric Cowboy and drive home.

Also, everyone goes down 31 to the Gregg county line to buy beer and liquor, which leads to whisky bend roulette. I was run off the road on 31 several years ago by some jackass that was passing a line of cars in an attempt to beat the clock and make the liquor store before 9pm.

I really can't think of any pros to living in a dry county.

And since you're writing a paper, it's "counties", not "countys."

To put the DWI angle into perspective, as of June, good ole dry Smith County has has 283 DWI accidents this year.

They will say that the extra tax income from alcohol will offset the added law enforcement needed. In some cases, that may be true. I know first hand that the city of Duncanville was about to go broke, and a lot of retired city workers were about to lose a good portion of their benefits. As soon as they voted to go wet, the income issues went away.

Can you pick sides or are you supposed to highlight both sides? So far, the only real pro we have is that there might be less hobos, and the ones that do stick around would have to drink listerine for their buzz.

See, there is your problem. You're using common sense and being realistic.

You'll next have to bring God into it and a few other things.

....I do think it is ridiculous to have dry counties, but then allow people to get sloshed at a bar where they have to drive home.
