Cop shoots and kills son after reportedly mistaking him for an intruder

An off-duty police officer shot and killed his son after mistaking him for an intruder, New York State Police said.
Michael Leach, 59, an officer with the Parry Police Department in Wyoming County in western New York state, was staying at a motel in Old Forge. He called 911 early Saturday to say he just shot someone he thought was an intruder, troopers said, according to The Syracuse Post-Standard.
The victim turned out to be his son, Matthew S. Leach, 37, of Rochester.
Troopers said that the elder Leach used his department-issued .45-caliber Glock handgun in the shooting. He was hospitalized after the shooting for what troopers described as a "medical issue."

This is tragic. May God be with that family at this time because odds are, this is going to wind up a murder/suicide because what father can survive knowing he killed his son?

Just serves as a reminder cops are humans, not super trained, infallible men. Take what you can from it.

No that is really, really sad. Police are trained to see everyone as a potential threat. The problem is how police are trained.

This guy's life will forever be scarred; he will NEVER be able to get over this.

He will get over it just fine if he is a sociopath. If he is not a sociopath he will probably kill himself with the same gun. I hope that they can drag him into some serious counseling before it comes to that.

I remember a very similar scenario that happened in Florida several years ago. The son came home, (don't remember details) but the father had mistaken him for an intruder and accidentally shot him. That story though had much more detail.

Regardless, killing anyone you know accidentally has got to be the worst thing to happen to someone, let alone your own child.
