  • Cost to air condition insulated 40x60 building ?

Anyone have an idea on what it would cost to cool a 40x60 insulated metal building ?

How big of a unit is necessary to cool that size building ?

The roof has the skylight panels, so that may affect the cooling.

    Buy a porta-cooler. A big one.

Get some port a cools. Ac would kill your electric bill in a shop like that unless you keep the doors closed 24x7 and make surew they are sealed down the sides and insulated.

          Already insulated per OP?

Are you wanting a central air? That will be a big expense but probably cool the best. Portacools work well.

You could also go hillbilly crazy with window units and cut out sheetmetal everywhere.

Porta-cool is out of the question due to my dad's mill, lathe, steel work table, etc.

Building was very well insulated when it was built.

2400 sq ft...it would be like cooling a home. Is it all one big open area? How tall? It would be easier if it could be segmented into areas that need to be cooled and then non-cooled areas.

How often/long will the A/C be run? 8x5? 24x7? Only on weekends?

Yes, it's all one big open area. The walls are 12 ft with the ceiling peaking at probably 15 ft.

We're here 7 days a week, and usually all day, or until we can't take the heat any longer.

I should also mention that we have 3 phase electrical out here, so the electric bill wouldn't be out-of-this-world-god-awful.

With that ceiling height two 5 tons should do it. What temp would you like it to run at?

I have two friends with similar sized set ups that are cooled.

One of them runs a CNC machine that doesn't like 90* days, and has guys tig welding turbo headers. He installed 4 24k btu window units and it dropped the temp 12-15* in his building. His bill went up a $300 dollars running them about 30 hours a week.

The other guy has a section walled off and a single five ton, runs a soaker hose on the roof, and can get it down to the high 70's on a 95* day
