  • Corporate Culture.....

So I have a meeting with some bigwigs at this company tomorrow morning. A few days ago, I got an email from the key contact I've been working with who sent me the following email:

"Regarding your on-site visit next week, couple little heads-up pointers for you so that you can avoid some common pitfalls:

We are a unique culture/work environment, we celebrate the brands we sell.. and we wear them. If it's practical, I would highly recommend you wearing some "our brand" clothing while on campus. I am literally wearing shorts and flip flops right now - and jeans on the colder days. I happen to normally wear an "our brand" button-down shirt, but many folks in the summer wear short sleeve "our brand" T-shirts and/or "our brand" polos. Many people have a very hard time accepting this notion without having first seen the campus, but trust me that I am not joking =). Folks that wear business-casual (or especially suit attire) end up sticking out like a sore thumb... and I'd hate to have you guys noticed for the wrong reasons. If you are unable to grab some "our brand" gear for any reason, I'd recommend otherwise casual clothing, but with a huge caveat that it should not display other clothing brand icons/lettering/insignia/etc., and it should definitely not be black in color. If you wear jeans to the campus, I'd recommend a similar inconspicuous brand, preferably dark-colored denim (again, no black of course). "

Needless to say, I picked up some of "our brand" clothing and it just doesn't feel right on me, but whatever it takes to win the business. It's a massive deal and I'm a ho, so I'll do what it takes, but..... WTF?? This is literally my first meeting in my professional career that I didn't have slacks and at least a sport coat, if not tie on....

Question is - do any of you work for a company like this that drinks the kool-aid and just bleeds corporate culture? Do you believe the hype?

      Not relevant to the topic...

If yes - why? Is it just for the paycheck?

eBay, Google, Yahoo and companies like that have this culture, atleast from what I have experienced.

I have spent some time at PayPal/eBay facilities and it is just like you mentioned. Shorts, flip flops, free drinks, no offices for execs, everyone sits on the same floor. Proud of their company, thats for sure.

Any ad agency. My wife is a Director for an ad agency. She can only have client products in the office; no competitors' products allowed.

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

hah... I asked the same thing. This was the response:

"Simply put, black (and purple for that matter) are too "formal" of colors for our Casual Luxury lifestyles! "

While I can understand this, some take it overboard... Guess I'll see tomorrow, but I'm guessing it's an extreme version of the same.

While I can respect it, I just don't understand how some can live their lives around a brand.

Being that it's from your key contact, drink the koolaid. Our corporate office is dress casual, but the nature of our business really isn't brand-centric. I work out of my home office though, so I am in shorts and flip flops all the time anyway.

I'm in sales as well, and even when going to weekly meetings with a big client where they are usually all in busines casual, I always wear a suit. Black or charcoal if I am meeting a client for the first time or two, a sport coat and slacks once we have a rapport. If it's a one-on-one with a long-time customer I'll leave the jacket at home, but still wear a button-down and slacks.

That's just me though, some people are completely fine dressing down, but if business is on the line, I prefer to remain as professional as possible at all times.

I bet the entire office has a stench of Fierce. JCP does this at corporate, but it's not brand specific.
