  • come home for kids or stick it out?

Where do you draw the line with earnings vs home time with the family/wife? I travel out of state in a sales related position and trying to determine if a large pay cut is worth beibg home nightly. Would you take a large paycut to be home daily?

Depends on the travel. If it isn't anything interesting or exotic, I'd rather be home nightly. Money isn't everything, especially if you have a family.

Its come back to bite me in the ass. I worked crazy hours for years, 7:00am to 7/10:00pm, sometimes for 6-7 days a week. All to make sure they had everything they needed and more. Of course now it gets thrown back in my face that I didn;t spend enough time with them. You damn well though that if there ain't enough money, you will get, we never had anything growing up. Its a no win scenario if you ask me.

You can't replace time with your kids. When they grow up you'll regret all the time you missed out on. I'd take the paycut if it were keeping me away from my kids more than a few days here and there.

I would rather live in a van down by the river than have to keep a job that kept me away from my kids 90% of the time like that.

No, just a sales position that covers a large territory out of state

Problem is, in another year you'll be telling yourself the same thing....

I recently turned down a position with an increase of that, because it would have been 85-90% travel. I have second thoughts about my decision all the time. I love the time with my kids, but that's quite a bit of money. Henry is right. No win situation. You do what your family needs you to do.

I know when I'm on my death bed I'm not going to regret that I didn't stack more paper, but I would regret not being there for my kids. It's also got to be hard on your marriage.
