You have a drug that gets stored in fat, or chronic use, it will be there for awhile. For instance, I had a guy on a prescription for phentermine. I knew he was on it, and he would pop for Amphetamines on a drug screen. So his name came up, and sure enough, positive for amphetamines. He said he stopped taking it around 4 days before coming to work, but he still popped. So, just out of curiosity, I tested him the next 4 days, and finally on day 8, he pissed clean.
Now, was all the drug gone? Maybe, maybe not, but if there was still some left, the concentration was not high enough to register a positive.
Also, here is a big one too. It all depends on what kind of piss test is being administered. If they are using the rapid reader styles, which give you a result within about 5 mins, you can get a bad batch and people show positive when they actually aren't. If thats the case, the samples should be sent to a certified lab where they can run the full tests.
If the samples are sent to a lab, the lab can analyze everything and tell you specifically what drug and how much is present, not just the triggers. (Amphetamine, Barbituates, Opiates, etc)
Bottom line here though, is if you are taking meds, especially prescription meds, and your work place has a drug testing rule, make sure you tell them right away if you get tested. You have a better chance of keeping your job.
Now if you are using recreational shit, well, you roll the dice.
