I would rather not have a dog then have a small dog.

Go to the pound and save a dog's life. Plenty to choose from, and there may be some perfect mix you wouldn't have even thought of.

That said, as far as small, purebred dogs go, I dig French Bulldogs. They are like beefed up pugs.

Dude, don't try to pretend you know about feist dogs, or working terriers.

Shitzu (sp) are nice. My Parents have 2 and my Brother and his wife have 2. They are great little dogs with a lot of personality. Not too hyper. Just a hair cut once every month or so and they are good to go.

Yeah you're right ill stick with my blue working dogs won't ever own another breed again! I do know a whole lot more about the hounds and cur breeds then I do terriers the only one I'm running is a bull terrier.

All three breeds that I mentioned are too much of an open mouth dog for me personally.

Rat Terriers and Bostons are cool dogs. Just keep in mind they have a lot of energy so they will be pretty hyper and you'll need to let them get out and excercise a lot.
I love pugs and French bulldogs but they do come with their potential health problems. I happen to think a lot of them can be prevented by not letting them get fat. My Frenchie is my best bud and the best dog I've had.

Im not buying a pure bred. We will be going to the shelter and SPCA to see what we find.

I just like to know if there are any known issues within a breed to try and stay away from.

Whatever you do, I'd be sure to get a bulletproof vest for the dog in case the police ever stop by.

My healer is getting better about playing with her, but just isnt really liking it very much. She watches over her and is gentle, but doesnt really want to be crawled on, etc.

Duke is sweet as hell, loving, but has no idea that he is big. He bumps into her without knowing, so she is shy around him. He will let her do about anything to him, he's just clumsey. Im thinking a small lap dog would be her best friend.
I am thinking about getting a mastiff, what's your experience/tips

Rescue - find a dog at a kill shelter and save a life.

Don't get locked into a specific breed if you can help it - far too many dogs out there need homes.
