My younger brother won a Yeti cooler in a contest. Whoever can break one gets a brand new one. Well, he broke it, and it broke him too. He had to get 5 stitches above his left eye after it bounced up and hit him after he slammed it into the ground. It did break though, eventually.

It sits covered in dust right now next to his tool box at work. I don't know if he has ever used it.
Annoying people, one post at a time!

Props to Yeti, though. They saw a market for suckers, and are making the most of it, and making retarded margins while they are doing it.
It's a HELL of a lot stronger than a Coleman or Igloo. I'm tired of breaking hinges and clasps.

Are High Performance Coolers Really Worth the Price?

If you have ever found your food floating in a cooler full of melted ice halfway through the trip, or wondered if your prize catch was going to spoil before you got it home, you’ll appreciate the performance of these top of the line coolers by Yeti and Engel. While they may cost significantly more than the standard department store cooler, there is a reason.

For starters, many of the less expensive coolers cut corners on insulation. Most offer less than an inch of insulation, and many have no insulation in the lids, where it s needed most. Some of these coolers rely on dead air space for insulation, which is extremely inefficient. The Engel Coolers feature at least 2 inches of freezer-grade insulation all around which makes their performance far superior to department store models.

Next, check out how these coolers close. The department store cooler probably stays closed with friction, which relies on two plastic surfaces meeting for a seal. The Engel high performance coolers all feature positive locks and freezer-grade gaskets for a tight, reliable seal that keeps the cold air in the the warm air out.

Standard coolers are typically injection molded from less expensive plastics, designed for a picnic in the park. The high performance marine coolers are roto-molded from high strength plastics to withstand extreme abuse. In fact, the Engel coolers are made with the same process and materials that are used to make white water kayaks! If your typical outing is more than a picnic in the park, you'll really appreciate the durability of the high performance cooler.

Tired of replacing your cooler every year or two? Your new Engel marine cooler will probably be the last one you ever need to buy. Engel Plastic marine coolers have been certified as bear resistant containers by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Council (IGBC). That means they have survived strenuous tests in the lab AND by hungry grizzly bears and are approved for use as camping coolers in areas inhabited by Grizzlies. It also means that these coolers will last a lifetime, and stand up to whatever your adventures throw their way.

I have nothing to add but amazement that such an organization as the Interagency Grizzly Bear Council was used to demonstrate quality.

Put a little rock salt in with the ice and you're golden. I've been from Dallas to Abilene, spent two days and back to Dallas and still had solid ice with minimal melting.

Salt on the ice will cause the beer to freeze solid.

Hinges and latches for the Colemans are about 15 bucks a set, Dicks has them.

My 5 day coleman works great and I don't feel like I have to tie it down with chains to keep the dam theves from stealing it.

I could see a Yeti based off of construction, but not cooling. We'd have coolers 3-4 days easily in Iraq still holding ice fairly good. I've camped 2-3 days with it fine.

I get it though on the construction side of it, sort of like a gun case. Still seems like limited usefulness for the average person due to its weight.

I have a couple of normal ($30-$50) coolers and they are flimsy pieces of shit. If I used a cooler more consistently, I'd have something like a yeti. It's nice to know that a piece of gear that you rely on isn't going to fall apart while you're using it.

Yetis are nice but for the money you could probably build a much better cooler using aerogel for insulation

maybe i am doing it wrong, but when i use an ice chest i fill it with beer and ice, load it in truck, unload it from truck, park it under a tree and and open to get a beer every 4-6 minutes. if im rough on it, i might sit on it for a bit. WTF are you doing to your ice chests ?

                                god bless.
