I'll be getting one hopefully for the birthday. At least it's one of the things I've asked for.

Brent, when I went to Garner this year and one of my buddies, the guy with the Caja de China had one, and for a long week/weekend of camping, not having to buy more ice is pretty key. His kept ice the entire trip, while my giant (stuff a human body in it) sized coleman Xtreme didn't after four days.

Are they expensive? sure, but if they'll keep ice, and out last a typical cheap cooler, i'm all for it. I'll still keep a few cheap coolers around for beer holding and typical day to day use.

Probably not the best idea if you value your well being.

We used to buy a new industrial white ice chest(the dead body one) about once a year. Dragging it in and out of the logger or in and out of the truck bed took its toll. I used to replace the hinges when they inevitably broke with 2" strap and short screws to keep it going. Latches were the first thing to get torn off. Usually kept ice a day or two but it sat outside in the west Texas heat.

If you can make one of the cheap $20-50 units go more power to ya. My kids tear up an anvil in a sand box with a rubber hammer. If you can't fix it with a hammer, you have an electrical problem.

I've had a Coleman Extreme for over 10 years, never had issues with the hinges or latch, but I take care of my things. The largest influence on how long they keep ice is how many times you open the lid. Best bet IMO is to use the Coleman Extreme and buy a second one strictly for ice and only open it to top off the ice in the food/beer cooler when needed. You'd save a lot of money over buying a Yeti and probably have ice last longer this way. That's what I do when I'm camping in Wyoming and I never have to go to town for ice.

You're right. If I'm camping, I'd MUCH rather drag around a second cooler the size of a jeep to keep my ice in so that the cooler I'm using can actually be opened/closed.

For the record: That's twice as many shitty latches, handles, and hinges, and now you've got $100 tied up in junky coolers. Sounds like a good plan!

Sorry, carrying a second cooler to me is more convenient then driving 30 miles down logging roads to the nearest store to get ice, but I guess we all have different opinions. I know, I know, the ice NEVER melts in your $300 cooler so you'd never have to go to town.

Again, I have two Coleman Extremes and neither has had a failure. I guess junky is good enough for me. I should also say I actually keep 3 coolers - one for beer, one for food, and one for ice to replenish as needed. heh

No way in hell a second big ass cooler is convenient, and bigger Yeti's are more than $300.

I have been through two Coleman Extreme's and they are pieces of shit. They warp, they do not stay latched, or the latch just breaks, the hinges break, and the plastic seperates. I dont know which ones you are buying, but the Colemans I had were around $80. If I had to buy two just to retain ice I could have almost paid for one cooler that would do the same thing and not ever have to replace it.....

I guess it just depends on the type of camping everyone is doing. I have a cargo trailer I've converted to go offroad and it spends 2 weeks in Wyoming every year (plus various other trips closer to home). I have the room, so it's the best option for me. YMMV

My smaller drink cooler (65qt?) is at least 10 years old. I also have a newer 120 qt, and it's only 3-4. Both were around $50 if I recall correctly.
