I hope they put in in terms us "stupid" people can understand. I hope they get something out if it, like perpetual motion or something like that.

Those folks at CERN have this big machine, The Hadron Collider that smashes particles together at 99% the speed of light. It was created to see if they can see how the universe became what it is today (Big Bang Theory) as a result of years of testing they finally found the Higgs boson the "god particle" which is thought to have started it all.

That's it in a nutshell. I am sure I missed a few things or mis-represented something but you get the idear.

Higgs (in theory) didn't start it all, but it's what gives matter mass which is obviously a pretty fucking big deal.


It's also the only particle predicted by The Standard Model that has not been directly observed.

Sup, I can control and manipulate mass, aka gravity if I can understand how the universe created mass/gravity in the first place.

2. If the Higgs Boson created the big bang... what created the Higgs Boson?

3. Proving Big Bang occured does not prove or disprove that there is a supreme being.

1. I agree with you haha. However, I guess we can see if the big bang theory is true if it creates another universe lol.

2. Well if Higgs is the result of two other particles... then how would it be the "God particle". Would it not be the product of two other "God particles"? (What came first.... the chicken, the egg, or the higgs boson)

Not at all. There are tons of things that were discovered inadvertently by little minute things such as this. This in particular just opens a whole new worlds of possible discoveries.

I didn't say it was stupid or unworthy... I just thought it was ironic the way they worded it.

No.

You're logic is backwards. The Higgs Boson did not create the Big Bang. The Big Bang happened and then the Higgs was created.

Theory:
After the Big Bang particles had no mass. As the fucking rapidly expanding shit cooled the Higgs Field formed. This field permeates all of the universe and anything that interacts with the field is given mass via the Higgs Boson. More interaction means more mass, less interaction means less mass (eg. photons would have zero interaction).

When trying to explain the four fundamental forces of nature (weak, strong, electromagnetic, gravitational) scientists realized that the weak and electromagnetic forces could actually be described in the same theory ("unified") and this led to the development of The Standard Model. But there was a catch... to make the theory work mathematically the Higgs Boson has to exist.

It should be noted that the Standard Model actually predicted something like 16 fundamental particles (like quarks and leptons which are then made up of other stuff, etc) and all of them but the Higgs Boson have been confirmed via experiment.

Who said it did? Don't misunderstand the use of the term "God" in this one. It's a clever name, nothing more.
