  • What's your Online selling etiquette???

Long story kind of short.......not really......

Decided to post my 98 Z28 as a roller with all the extra parts I have on some boards. Got all kinds of interest surprisingly, but mostly just tire kickers and low ballers. Shocking I know.....

I got 2 serious inquiries last week. One guy came in from OKC, looked, liked it, but his wife said no. Shocking again.

While this guy was in line first, another gentleman from Louisiana wanted in on the deal. I told him to be fair the other guy had first shot at it. AS soon as the deal was a no go, I notified Mr. Louisiana he was next up for the deal.

This guy told me he works out in the Gulf on an oil rig and can't come get the car for 2 weeks, but he's considering the deal a done deal and it's sold to him. I said fine, send me a deposit and let's move on. This was last Wednesday........

For the past 3 days he's been saying he can't get Paypal to verify his account and all kinds of other things preventing the deposit payment. All while trying to get me to agree to taking the deposit via Moneygram. I sent a little bill of sale to him including all the parts in the deal as well as the roller, he agreed to it. I told him I will only accept Paypal since it protects us both.

I have had to turn away at least 10 offers and more than 20 interested people on this car and parts since this guy supposedly had a deposit and the deal locked up.

He has in all fairness been very good communicating with me. I am in no rush to sell, but I don't want to miss out on a deal cause this guy is dragging his feet.

Do I give him a solid deadline to come up with the $$? Do I tell him cash talks and he's losing the race? I know he has his work circumstances and all, so I am trying to be considerate.

    What does DFWMUSTANGS say?

I've been patient with this guy. If he has some other random excuse for no deposit being paid after today I'm moving on.......

With a deposit I have no problems waiting a week or so for final payment.

I don't ever turn an interested party away, and the guy trying to claim it as his should know better.

I have just replied to other interested parties that a deposit is on the way and that I will let them know first if it falls through. My original sales document I sent the guy had today as the deadline for deposit, even though we verbally agreed he would have to to me by last Friday.... So we'll see how it goes tonight. I'll be ready to contact all the other parties involved to push a sale should this guy flake for a final time.

I also know what it feels like to have a verbal deal done and find out a few hours later while you are getting you're cash at the bank that the part was sold out form underneath you.

Guess I just have to be more of a hard ass and just get a deal for my stuff....

He can consider it whatever he wants, but until money is in your hand its not sold. I will hold something for 48 hrs, but 2 weeks? screw that - he should be bending over backwards to buy, not the other way around.

Anyone who has ever sold or bought something off craigslist knows money talks and bullshit walks.

First come first serve. If that guy wanted it bad enough I am sure he had a friends account he could have used.

I used to hold out for people and it bit me in the ass. Now it is whoever gets the money to me first. I hate being that way but I have heard every lame ass excuse.

Last week I had two people email me the same night. Both offered less than I listed it for. I responded with both. Guy 1 calls me and sets up a time to get it. Guy 2 emails me back an hour later saying he can come get it. I said sorry Guy 1 is already on his way and if it falls through I will let you know.

Guy 2 gets pissed and tells me I can shove the transmission up my ass. lol I sold it to Guy 1 for my asking price.

                    That's hilarious!

I hate being that way too, but after 5 days of him being offshore, or his wifes paypal account not working, or wanting to send a money gram instead of our agreed Paypal, I'm at an endpoint. He's very good texting or calling me, I have to give him that. But there is still no resolution.

If there isn't a deposit tonight for the car, I'm moving on, and he can shove his money gram up his ass. lol.

Paypal will take a few days to verify if the other person is a newb. Id be patient until it all goes through.

Why put yourself in a worse situation over some unprepared stranger? Whoever has the money gets the vehicle. I'm not in the business of doing favors, I'm in the business of getting money for my items.

First with cash = sold. No deposit, just show up with cash, leave with item.

Deposits can turn into a nightmare. They send a deposit, then decide to bail on the deal and then want the deposit back. Even if the it was said to be non-refundable, the buyer will say the item was not as described or was not really as nice as it was said to be. It had one more chip than it was suppose to have. There was more dust on it than expected....yada yada yada. Then you are back to square one...

full price in cash in person = sold

LOL @ giving a deposit back. Some people must not understand what a deposit is.
