  • Whats in a last name?

Do you think your last name can destroy or make your career?

What if you were an aspiring engineer, however your name was James Hitler? Do people still carry that last name anyway?

I've watched stuff on jeffrey dahmer or charles manson, and their families hide their last name or get it changed after the infamous events.

Just recently I watched a special on the children of Hitler, two of the kids from the family of Himmler i believe decided to move to BFE new mexico ( maybe arizona ), they have no internet/connection to the outside world, and then they had themselves sterilized so they can no longer have kids.

What about the positives? Do any of you have a famous last name that you think may have gotten you treatment where you normally would not have?

Yes, it can. If somebody with the last name Gonzales applies for an engineering job his application will probably get looked over unless that company's quota of minorities has yet to be met. However, if their quota hasn't been met, he'll have a better chance than somebody with the same credentials with the last name Smith. It's a double edged blade.

I put Big A on mine, and it has worked for me quite well.

I guess it can be a issue, especially in the business world. My last name isn't really a common one and most people arent sure of what type of last name it is. People could think It is Indian for all I know. So yea, I get the feeling that if the person doesn't hear me speak they think I am some kind of foreigner. People ask all the time where my last name originates from.

Couldn't have said it better myself. My old lady is sharp as a tack but swears that the only reason she got into smu was because they needed to meet their minority quota. She's black and I gave her my last name,GonzaleZ, so it looks like they killed two minority birds with one stone. Now she gets a shit load of interviews from companies thinking that she's Mexican or speaks Spanish.

Reminds me of the old ZZ Top song, "Mexican Blackbird" off of the Fandango album..."Let's drive that old Chrysler to Mexico, boy's..."

I tell young people all the time, to use any advantage you have to get into the door. It's a tough sonuvabitch out here.

I don't think the guys with the last name muhaumed, hussein, or any other form of arabic names would have a shot at getting any aerocraft position.

My last name has made my life 10x easier than it would have been otherwise. All because of what some people have done with it prior. It's a lot of luck though. I have cousins with different last names, and even though we share the same family they don't receive the family recognition that I do. If one female family member had been in my direct lineage than I would have someone else's last name. So yes, imo a last name can very much help dictate how your life turns out.

Although I do have to add that the more your name is recognised because of the people who came before you, the more pressure there is to live up to, or get away from the standard they set. I could only imagine being Michael Jordan's, or Bill Gates' kid. Or the other side of it, trying to get away from being Adolf Hitler's, or Jerry Sandusky's kid.
