Phone books. Thing of the past?

A lot of the 20-somethings and 30-somethings do that, find the biz on a YP.com or Yellowbook and research the companie's website. www.YP.com is turning into a great internet/cellphone transitional tool for the Baby Boomers, they're really familiar with the print but most people don't have a book in the trunk of their car.

Some short people have them in the seat of their car, though.

To the majority of us on this site, they are relatively obsolete. However, the benefit of the directory is to find a local biz for a service. Most of this site has an apartment, a rental home or lives with parents... NONE of those demographics help your average plumber or AC guy. Google still can't figure out a way to do effectively what the local book does. Search engines are great for buying stuff online, whereas the book is still very much a solid local point-and-shoot search tool.

Exactly. If I am calling around getting pricing on parts or work I find them to be a lot more useful than the BS searches that come up sometimes using the Interwebz!

I typically pick them up from the front porch and deposit them straight into the garbage. Although I do like to hold on to one at a time or so because the paper works good to start a fire.

I do think their use is generational and at some point, as the remaining baby boomers die off, their use will continue to decline.

Don, I haven't seen any real data to know what the actual demographic of the site. However, I do know many of us have homes. Recently I had the need for a plumber and Google resulted quite well. Was it exactly as granular as the phone book? No, but in as much of an advertisement based search it did quite well, IMHO. Example Plumbers in Mansfield

Don, I haven't seen any real data to know what the actual demographic of the site. However, I do know many of us have homes. Recently I had the need for a plumber and Google resulted quite well.
