To me, it's just the same as adding an additional dollar, two, etc. There was a server at a Chili's or some crap like that in Austin that added like $1-2 to my tip. Overall, it wasn't going to break the bank but I called in and inquired. Turns out, he had done the same to everyone and had already been fired before I had called. I'd be willing to bet that if you'd just leave a flat dollar amount, the problem will stop.
If anything, using your logic, I would round down to the whole dollar. If I'm at a place where the service is average, I'll figure what 20% would be, then round up to the nearest dollar, and then add enough change to make the total an even number.

Depends on the Sonic. Some pay thier carhops as much as $8/hour. That said, on the rare occasion I go to Sonic, I always tip them a buck or two. I despise the food there, though.

Just to be sure, the amount on the receipt is different than the transaction? From a business expense point of view it would be a PITA to keep track of little crap like that.

Either way, it's wrong and it's not like you're stiffing them on a tip.

I went to a bar about a month ago for a few beers. Tab was 17, tip was 8 for a total of 25. Well, whoever closed out the tip decided that an almost 50% tip wasnt enough, so they took it upon themselves to increase the tip $5. I got the entire amour back, the bitch that did it got fired. Fucking thieves. I don't give a fuck if you increase it a penny, it's still stealing, in my eyes.

Just about every Sonic I've been to(for work) has the carhops working for (at least) minimum + tips.

The ones here in Midland are making up to $14 plus tips.

I had work program class in HS and it was half sonic girls, they were making $6-7 plus tips and that was 10 years ago. Needless to say I don't tip them unless they just catch me in an extraordinarily nice mood.

LOL shit McDonald's on Midkiff has a sign hiring starting at $14.50 no experience- its crazy. I think every retail establishment out here is looking for help minimum $15/hour.

Our babysitter back in Dfw works at sonic and was telling us she was paid same as waitresses $2 something hourly plus tips.

Reminds me. We went to the taco bell o the north side the other night and they closed an hour and a half early. I walked up to the drive thru and asked why they were closed early and the girl said, "because we feel like it, if you want something to eat whataburger is down the street." I talked to the manager about the incident and he apologized and said there wasn't really anything he could do since if they fire them there isn't a pool of applicants to pull/hire from.

It's ridiculous around here, with the exception of a few restaurants it is almost impossible to get good service. My neighbor owns Murray's Deli and he is always talking about how short handed they are. I've considered putting in a application at Academy to work the gun counter at night just for the hell of it and a discount if they would pay me $15 an hour to do it. I used to do that job for $7 in college.

This. I usually add the change to my tip to make the total even. The way I see it is that it's "extra" money on top of the tip for the server. I figure a lot of people do that, so it has the potential of being a few extra bucks each shift. That being said, no one should ever change the amount from what I write down.
