I bet the Mustang could even beat it on a road course.

Instead, as alternatives, you list a car prone to snap oversteer and a car that's naturally going to understeer like a motherfucker.

Just got back from a road trip to Austin in my friends FRS.
On looks, the car is pretty nice. Was a headturner everywhere we went. Its got some style points.
On the drive down, man - this is NOT a comfortable car to sit in for any long period of time. The seats are too "race" oriented and have no lumbar adjustmenet. Only front/back and angle. The seat belt feeds beneath a fabric snap closure (not a plastic guide) and sits uncomfortably high up to the neck. It is an absolute pain in the ass to get in and out. You need a lot of space on the sides just so the doors can open far enough to let you out. In a crowded parking lot we had to pass on some good spaces because it was too narrow.
A six speed transmission is nice and smooth, but in 4th gear it climbs so fucking slow. With a 7500 redline it takes damn near forever to get there. Only reason i ever went into 6th was for cruise control at 75 and that put the engine at 3k. Hit a hill and you have to downshift to keep the speed up. The engine just doesnt have the oomph to accelerate with cruise control self disabling.
The suspension is really nice and tight and steering is really responsive. There was no rocking or swaying of the car through any of the twisty roads or high speed turns we went through. This car will be a serious contender at autocross events. It was certainly a fun car to whip around corners and not have it feel out of control. The seats did help pretty good here with the side bolsters and keep you planted.
However, if your twisty road or course has any elevation changes, you are fucked. The anemic powerplant will usually have you dropping a gear to get up the hill. (i drove these same roads in my stock 98 GT which also had 200rwhp and i could always hang in 3rd or 4th and accelerate up a hill). Now dont get me wrong, this car was fun to shift but its like having a manual transmission on. 4cyl car. Theres too much shifting.
Its a cool little car, but its just a round the town sportscar. If you go on a trip with it, roll it up on a trailer and sit in an F150 where you will be far more comfortable. If you have a long work commute 45min-hr each way, forget it.
