Lol, I had a buddy in the corps and he went down for a tour. He said that he'd rather do a year in iraq getting shot at then 6 months on that thing, lol. I'm better with a smooth ride in 72 degree weather than a hot sandy time of getting shot at. Just me though.

Just sayin....... but yes, 70's, semi quiet, no bullets, no weather conditions (unless a high sea state) is pretty plush. One watch I stood was in a control center and it was 52 with a breeze. We wore the big ass Mustang jackets.

Man some of those "bent spear" or whatever the fuck they are called SUCK!! I was on the fire control team and I'd be woken up all the fucking time to plot data and time lines. Such bullshit, all so the officers could play war. And THEN i was on the submerged contact tracking team and had to run the ships plots.

See, I have an issue any time I have to worry about mechanics of the lowest bidder for an air supply. Add to that if you do engage someone and you have to do a dive, they don't actually have to destroy you. Mess up your ballast tanks and you're going to suffocate. Or ballast tanks and dive planes and you drop below crush depth and turn into a Dr. Pepper can.

                          I'll take getting shot at.

Or you encounter some sort of bright lights and electrical malfunction while carrying nuclear missiles and crash and breach the hull. Then some grease monkey oil drill team that works a mile under the surface of the ocean has to help recon the missiles with the help of an elite team of soldier that go crazy due to being so far down under the ocean.

Next you will be telling me you have to breathe this pink liquid so you can take a dive suit down and manually deactivate the nuclear missiles that were armed by the crazy soldiers...

                            Or just stay top side.

Hey man, don't kid yourself about us "dumb mechanics" on the boats. We actually know what we are doing. It's not like they send a whole division of guys who have never seen a piece of atmosphere control equipment out to sea at once. There is a chief, that has usually been doing the job for 10 years plus and an LPO that usually has about the same amount of tenure. I'm sure it's the same in the corps.

And I'm not sure if you are thinking correctly. The movies where there are people that are topside, and they spot an enemy with their binoculars and then the boat dives and fires a torpedo at them are very accurate.... for WWII. Nowadays we can pick up a contact at 100,000 yds (that's 50 Nautical Miles) and continue tracking them, close in and engage it if need be. We are called the silent service for a reason. (granted if you go back to the true meaning of that, it's cause the WWII sub sailors wouldn't talk to the media). But none the less we are very quiet and stealthy. Hell We can even do an Underhull (where we raise the periscope fully submerged and look straight up, then we drive under a surface contact and video/take pictures of the bottom of their ship) And we do not get counterdetected. Todays submarine capabilities are beyond what a lot of people understand.

And I don't know if you realize just how damn tough these boats are built. There was one, like I said earlier, that ran into an underwater sea mountain almost straight on at a flank bell. She made it. Only one casualty. Pretty lucky if you ask me. And she pulled in on the surface (ballast tanks kind of in tact, lol) But she made it and that's all that really matters.

I'm not trying to insult you, just teach you if that is what you are interested in. You just kind of hit a sore spot with me when you said mechanics of the lowest bidder, which I assumed meant that you truly think that the mechanics on the boats are retards. Z06 and I went to sub school in CT together, and it is a running joke onboard submarines that the A-gangers (what the conventional mechanics call themselves) are dumb. And a lot of them are, but there is usually some good leadership to guide the dumb ones, lol.

I didn't mean the ones on the ship. I mean the ones building it. They can be built extremely well but they're still machines. Machines you depend on to keep you from being crushed and supply your oxygen. Just like I won't climb into a tank. They're built great but I've seen what an IED can do to them.

I am not insulted, I'm actually enjoying learning about the ships
