  • June 6, 1944

The Normandy Landings were the first operations of the Allied Powers' invasion of Normandy, also known as Operation Neptune and Operation Overlord, during World War II. D-Day for the operation, postponed 24 hours, became June 6, 1944, H-Hour was 6:30 am.

Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force!

You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have
striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The
hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.
In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on
other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war
machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of
Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well
equipped and battle hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of
1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats,
in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their
strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home
Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions
of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men.
The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to
    Victory!

I have full confidence in your courage and devotion to duty and skill in
battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory!

Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great
    and noble undertaking.

    SIGNED: Dwight D. Eisenhower

Fuck! I was wanting to post first thing in the morning.

Salute to brave men. Leslie's grandfather stormed the beach. It was an honor to met and know him. I cried during Taps at his funeral. I'm glad Trey got to meet him, but I wish we had more time.

On that note, remember their efforts, in fact, the collective effort of our nation as a whole. It was a time when EVERYONE stood together and showed the world that We the People were a force not to be fucked with. God Bless those men. God Bless the whole "Greatest" Generation!

      Buncha haases up in there...

My father was in that battle, 146th combat engineers. He is 88 years old now, and just completed an interview of his companies adventures and battles for the Eisenhower war museum. Had to get parental release to join at 17. Was wounded twice in battle, shot in the leg on D-Day. People today (including myself) have no idea what its like to struggle and fight for what you want.

Yep. Mine too. Was a runner during the invasion and stayed throughout most of the European Theater. God Bless those heroes.

Remembering my Uncle Jim today, along with all of the other brave souls that took part in Operation Overlord.
My Uncle Jim was a gunner on a B-26 Marauder at the time. His crew flew what was, at the time, a record five back-to-back missions from the night before until the evening of D-Day. They returned only long enough to rearm and refuel.
