Can a travel agent get any better deals than you can just by searching on the intrawebz?

On certain things they can, mainly group discounts with hotels/cruises, etc. where they have better rates. It is hard to beat online specials though. I have a friend who is a travel agent, I compare things with him a lot. He has helped me on certain things, and told me to go online for others. They are definitely a dying breed though.

Yes, they can get a better deal than you find on the web. Then they keep the difference between those two prices plus a fee from you to earn a living.
